I am a college freshman, and I am cheering at my University now. I wanted to find an open team after college is over, time permitting, and was wondering how old do you think is too old to cheer? I see older people on many open teams, and when I graduate I will be 21. I just can't think about giving up cheer yet!

I personally decided I was too old/felt too old at like 23....maybe I was 22. But I'm not as liberal minded about these kind of things as some people.

I'm wondering the same thing! Although, a little different situation. I'm hoping to take private tumbling classes to get the skills for an open team, but I'm not sure if I'll get them in time before being "too old" lol

i had a woman on my level 6 last year who was 38. Did the elite(hand in hands and round off rewinds) double full baskets, middle of the pyramid etc. Age is a mind set. Dont let anyone tell you to stop doing something you love or you will look back on your younger life with regret. I walked on an opportunity to do team usa bc i thought i was too old. Huge regret looking back. Do what you love and all else will fall into place. Nobody can tell you whats right for you.

I'm 33, cheering IOAG 6, going to Worlds for the second time this year. I tumble, I'm still learning new tumbling skills, and I base/back all the stunts you could think of, level 5 and 6.

You're too old when your body gives out, when you don't love doing it anymore or when you start holding your team back. Don't let anyone tell you you're too old before then

My oldest athlete turns 30 this year, and she is hands down more talented at 30 than she was in her early 20s. In fact, since September shes gained more skills. I tell her shes like a fine wine lol. Better with age.

For those who are still competing, is it different at tryouts? Like, do you feel like coaches or other teammates think of you different or expect something different from you? Or do you feel like your age makes it harder for you to make the team during tryouts (like, they would rather have someone younger with the same skills)?

Things are a little different over here but anyways:
I'm almost 31 and will be competing at worlds for the first time ever this year. I've never been more fit or skilled than I am now. Although I must add, that I've never been a tumbler. I started cheer at 21, by the way. ;)

Good Luck to You Jule! Cheering at World's is one of the best experiences I ever had! So just soak it all in and enjoy it!!

By the way, my family is from Germany! Like great, great, great, great, great grandparents. My last name is Spuck... and only you will think that's funny becasue you know what it means! LOL!! It could be worse I guess but it's funny!

I think they expect the same from me as from any athlete. And if I can't keep up, I expect to get cut. I think they take who is best for the team, not who is older or younger. Keep in mind that having coached me for 8+ years, my coach knows what to expect from me, versus a younger kid who may be newer to the club. Young athletes are also more likely to be influenced by money, school or parental choices (ie, I can't afford this anymore, I have finals next week, etc.). Our coaches pick the best athletes for the team that year. Who has the skills, who will work best with the team dynamic

As long as you are still physically able to do so, I don't think you're ever "too old" to cheer :) Heck, I'm going to be a college freshman this fall at 21 and I plan on trying out for cheerleading ;)
