High School Highschool Cheer In General

My team from high school has changed drastically over 4 years. We have had 3 different sets of coaches, 2 gyms and very different ways of doing things. We always voted between the 4-year veterans of the team and seniors for 4 captain spots. We had to attend every practice and game, looking sharp and like cheerleaders should. This was all for my first coach. My second coach really helped me form into a proper cheerleader and step up on my team. We had 2 captains based on how they acted....not voted on by anyone, just happened to be the two people who did everything for our team. We looked like real cheerleaders and had to act like it to. This past year, our coach had never coached a school team. We had one captain that she picked, and she really couldve cared less how we looked. Consequences were always threatened, but never taken into action unfortunately. It was quite sad. Hope your team is in better shape and good luck!

I coach at a very small school so we only have one cheer squad for high school and hopefully, we will get to have a junior high team this coming year. I have a squad of 7 and only had 13 tryout. Hoping that now that the program is turned around and bringing back jr. high cheer that I continue to get more girls to try out. My girls wear their uniform top and opposite bodysuit than what they are wearing to the game with their warm up pants to school, but are not allowed to wear their skirts due to the length not meeting the dress code requirements.

It's odd that some Christian/Catholic schools have been mentioned as wearing longer skirts because the teams that we see at games that are Christian/Catholic schools have skirts shorter than ours and some of them you can even see their stomachs when they do a high V. Guess it's just a matter of location perhaps that makes a difference on how strict some schools are on their uniform policies.
I went to a catholic high school and my coach refused to follow the guidelines set by the district. We ended up getting penalized for "inappropriate conduct" 'because our coach not only allowed, but encouraged & enabled our behavior.

Why do they compete non building if they're good stunters? Just curious :) I don't really know how UCA works haha we go to NCA

Well, I believe it was to increase their chances of winning. They entered that division because they knew they'd dominate since there's full squad fulls. So I'm sure the coach put them in that division to get the white satin jackets :)

This year we had a JV and Varsity. It was like two separate schools because it was two teams who didn't interact with each other. We didn't compete. Freshman couldn't make a higher level. We wore uniforms on game days. We had Allstar girls not gymnasts.

Next year it's changing. We have a new head coach. It's going to be JV and Varsity. We probably will compete from the sound of it. It's going to be program together. Our competition team will be from both varsity and JV

This is my 10th year cheering but only my 2nd cheering for school. We moved and it was to much work and $$ driving an hour everyday to the gym. But we have 3 teams for our sideline season. Fresh JV and Varsity. During competitive we have varsity and then depending on how many girls tryout we disperse them in to jv or fresh. But our competitive is alot different from the cheerleading most of you are used to. In michigan we aren't allowed to use music. At all. We also have to compete 3 times. They're called "rounds" in round 1 we do a minute and a half routine of just motions and jumps. In round 2 its all about standing tumbling and jumps but still some motions. And then our round 3 is basically an all star routine with no dance at the end. And we have to make cheers for each one since we can't use music. Id say (from what I see) alot of teams in our state are very strong stunters but aren't as strong in tumbling. I think at states i only saw around 8 people throw fulls. But I saw level 4/5 stunts from almost everyone. We aren't allowed to wear our uniforms to school (im not sure why) but we usually wear spirit wear or we dress up!

Am I the only one who's school doesn't even HAVE JV cheer? We just have Varsity Football and Basketball teams. Football has 9 girls (one dropped out), Basketball has 10 girls plus 4 guys.
Also, freshman can't even try out. Only 10th-12th grade can make the team. And you can't cross over and do both squads until senior year.
No, we can't wear uniforms to school. On game days, we wear our main cheer jacket.
Yes, we compete! This year we will probably be Co-Ed, Non-tumbling. We're not AMAZING but we do just fine; a couple years ago we got 3rd at state:)
My team ranges from some girls who have done all-stars since birth to girls who have literally never cheered in their life. So it's a nice mix :)

We have 5 teams.
JV Football
Varsity Football
JV Basketball
Varsity Football
Competition.

The coaches decide the comp team over the summer. The rest are decided tomorrow (wish me luck.) More than likely the Comp girls won't be on the basketball teams

We don't have JV either. I have 10 girls that cheer both Basketball and competition (we don't have football, does that tell ya how small we are? lol)
We just now brought back jr. high cheer so I have a mix of 3 girls who have cheered since 6th grade and the rest who have never cheered before. Let's just say, we are SLOWLY progressing.
And no the girls don't wear their uniforms to school either. They either wear a team shirt or they wear their warm-ups.

For football we only have one team, so everyone makes it on varsity. In the winter we have varsity and JV, but this is only the 2nd year we've had JV and it took a lot of work from the Boosters to even make it possible.

At the high school I cheered at it was broken up in to three teams. We had JV,Varsity, and competition team. All of varsity was on the competition team and jv members were allowed to try out for the two slots we had open. This was aside from the 5 man team that was hand selected by the coaches. We wore whatever our coaches decided for us to wear on game days which could be uniforms or spirit wear.

My school has a JV Football team, a Varsity Football/Competition team, and a Varsity Basketball team. JV Football has 18 girls, Varsity Football/Competition has 24 girls (8 of those are alternates for the competition team since only 16 girls can be on the mat) and Varsity Basketball has 18 girls. Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors can make JV. And all grades can make Varsity. We don't wear uniforms on game day, we have lots of spirit wear that we alternate between. There are only 2 allstar cheerleaders on the team (myself and one other girl) and we have about 4 gymnasts.

At my school we only have jv and varsity. You can make either jv or varsity no matter what grade you're in. So, we could have a freshman on varsity but a junior on jv. (That actually happened last season) we compete at my school usually in the large division even though we're a pretty small school. I know like less than half of the girls in my squad had cheered allstars before. We also had little tumbling which sucked.
