I wanted to mention an athlete on my daughter's team. She broke her hand (which we now know is going to require surgery) during warm ups on day two.......and she still competed and nailed everything. She does a featured tumbling pass and is on the last pass during tumbling section. She didn't tell the coaches until after the routine because she didn't want to be pulled and didn't want to let the team down.
I can't express how awesome that is. A true team player. I don't know if we have individual awards or not but I'm going to suggest we create one for that.

I'm sorry, but as a nurse this just upsets me. Why does this sport seem to encourage continuing to perform with severe injuries? Was she a base? If so, the danger to her flyer is unfathomable. And if she buckled that hand during tumbling, she could've gone down on her neck. What level was this? How would not competing with a fresh fracture be letting her team down? Were they going for abid?

At RTB, a level 6 athlete went down on his head in tumbling, laid there, and then got up and based a young lady for level6 stunts.

I saw a tweet commending 2 girls on a team for competing in boots.

And then there are the Top Gun and Cali Aces incidents.

To quote Sally Field, you only have this one body and this one life. As a country, we set a bad president by making a young Keri strugg a national hero for competing while injured.she went on to win gold, so it was okay. But it could've just as easily gone the other way.

I'm thankful your athlete is okay.i just wish she didn't feel like she would've let her team down. And I hate to think we, as adults, encourage this thinking.

I don't think it's this sport, I think it's all. Encouraged or not, a lot of athletes have this mentality in any given sport.

No, she was not a base. Oddly enough she almost got her front teeth knocked out toward the end of summer as a base, so she was kept from doing so for the remainder of the year.

My kid is a back spot and I always said again and again that I was so happy she wasn't a flyer because I was always seeing flyers come in to the ER. Until last year when I think every other patient of mine was a backspot with a broken nose! :-/

We were talking about this over the weekend. With other sports, though, you can easily replace the injured player. You also aren't putting others at risk by continuing injured ( with the exception, I guess, of NASCAR).

This was our first time at One Up and competing in Nashville and I absolutely loved this competition! The only complaint I had is for awards they had ALL age divisions for each level on stage at the same time and it was way to packed. For example level 2 awards every team in level 2 was on the stage at the same time and then were not even excused off the floor after their name was called. Other than that, it was great even the live music in the halls and it felt very professional from the practice room to the arena. I would definitely recommend this competition!!

Mini Level 2 (8 teams) was actually in the level 1 award ceremony. It would have been more crowded with those teams added to level 2 awards.

We were also at the level 5 award ceremony. Those teams were packing in like sardines.

If the competition continues to grow I am sure they will be forced to make some changes for the award cermonies.
