CheerCussion

Saw a picture of these on the Champions Cup Facebook page..

Anyone know anything about these? They sure would change the appearance of cheerleading!

Imagine tumbling in those....and wouldn't it hurt if your flyer's head hit you or something and they had that on? I mean, it usually hurts without it but I'm guessing it is hard plastic on the outside

From the website:

"CheerCussion is a safety headpiece molded out of the finest EVA rubber foam, offering maximum protection upon impact. The hook and loop chin strap combined with adjustable laces in the back, enables the headgear to custom fit each individual's head. It's even washable. LYCRA surrounds the outer shell, allowing air to flow throughout and prevent the athlete from enduring any extra heat. The CheerCussion headpiece is washable and can be branded with scholastic team name or gym logo. They also come in several colors and sizes. CheerCussion also allows the individual wearing it to maintain 100% peripheral vision."

So foam covered in Lycra.. Guess it won't hurt if you bump into each other. Interesting.

i think the idea is there, its just not realistic to expect this to actually take off. Yes concussions are a serious thing, but i dont think its reasonable to expect athletes to wear them. 1, I can almost guarantee whether we want to admit to it or not, if an athlete is wearing one (unless everyone is) they will most likely get made fun of. 2 its seems restricting and almost dangerous to others, and to be honest it may help but I can't see it preventing all that much! If the flyer gets hit in the head on the way down from a basket, I think the force of them landing is still going to jolt their head. again it may HELP but i personally dont think it will prevent many

The cheer helmet is the same guy trying to do the Champions Cup competition, the Cheer Agency, the Cheerfriends "MySpace" type social media site, an acting/modeling studio within his gym, a daycare, a teen nightclub, personalized water bottle labels, Mona vie....... I could probably think of more if I sat for a few minutes.

Just a guy trying to make a buck by finding the next big thing.

I've spoken with one of the creators and I think it has potential as a training device. Before attacking this remember MAJORITY of cheerleading as a whole is not as well educated as many that frequent the boards. I feel like this would be great for high schools introducing skills. I think any athlete recovering from an injury would benefit from this. Same thing as wearing an ankle brace etc. As for those of you saying "Im a backspot, base, flyer and I wouldn't do that" if I was your coach and I felt it safe I wouldn't ask.

Also I think of it this way - There have been so many negative things presenting cheer as dangerous and nothing being done. Do I think this is the end all be all, no. Do I think this is a step, yes.

Safety is a HUGE thing our sport needs more of. I wish more coaches would educate themselves but if they aren't things like this are better than nothing.

I wouldn't use it.
First because i'm really trying to teach my girls skills step by step. If someone is not ready for a double down, a kick Double, a back tuck basket or a Tumbling skill, they won't do it.
Yes, there are still injuries happening.
We have a nose/face protector for bases or back spots because getting hit in the face is the thing that i'm worried most about when trying new things (like a flyer learning a double down).
I'm more worried about a flyers neck than her head because this is a weak point when having a hard catch in flipping baskets for example.
I don't have too many Tumblers but i can imagine that Tumbling in a helmet isn't helping with body control.
Someone who is a good tumbler hitting a skill or pass confident probably won't mind, but learning it is better with a good coach and spot, on the right floor and with good technique.

That's all just spoken for my teams, i'm sure there are a lot of injurys that could be prevented by this helmet, i just don't see it happen

Honestly I don't think I would be able to tumble with one of these on... If tumblers depend on having the lightest shoe, imagine having that extra weight added to your head. Not to mention how would the girls put their hair up under those?

I can also see these causing people to throw tricks and stunts they're not ready for because "hey I have a helmet so I can't hurt myself!"

And correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't helmets used more to protect from cracking the skull rather than concussions? Because I know many people who have gotten concussions through their helmets...

i just wonder if the gym owners who's logos are being used on the helmets on their site, know about their gym 'endorsing' this product..

Exactly what I was thinking!

Aren't most concussions caused from the head/skull stopping suddenly and the brain keeps going thus hitting the skull (or vice versa head moving suddenly but brain still stopped)? How would a helmet prevent that?
