Do you think that an unpopular team could win Worlds? Not unpopular as in untalented, but a team that not everyone has heard of. Every year you hear the same people win: Top Gun, Stingrays, CEA, Cali, CA, etc. Obviously they're beyond talented, but what if a small town team went all the way? Is it probable, do you think?

If they have the talent, of course they could win. They would probably become "popular" throughout the season leading up to worlds, as most world caliber top 3 teams become popular and well known throughout the year.

Yes it's possible. The reason it rarely happens is because the large gyms are able to attract a larger talent pool and more athletes because of their successes (which is not a bad thing at all). The more athletes you have, regardless of the level, the more chances for success you have. Look at CA or Rays, they attract a huge number of athletes and a large talent pool. All teams from their gyms are successful year in and year out. Not saying that a smaller gym can't attract talented athletes, as there are many talented athletes in small programs, but it definitely is getting harder to.

I'm going to say most likely no. Nothing against not-so-popular gyms, and I don't think it's a popularity contest, but it's more so why the reason the popular gyms are popular. Popular gyms gain their fans because they're typically strong contenders year after year and almost always give stellar performances. Look at Cheer Athletics, they're mega popular, and now have over 30 Worlds titles and counting.
Also, teams come on the scene and blow everyone away, like GBE Lime did last year, getting fourth at worlds. Now they're popular once people saw that they had some serious, worlds winning caliber skills. I think once gyms become serious contenders for the title is when they become popular. Just my opinion though.

Could it happen? Conceivably, yes. Will it happen? In this day of instant have to know, somebody has gotta be the first to dish on the next new team - regardless of whether the team thinks of themselves like that or wants that type of attention, let's even record your rivals and put them on YouTube without their permission type atmosphere, the chances of that are very slim. The way for it to happen would be to get a bid at an early event and go into hiding until Worlds -again highly unlikely.

South Elite is that way in the greater-Seattle area. Especially after last year they have alot of level 5 athletes leaving their old gyms to go try out for Diamonds or up and coming athletes are switching over there for the potential to be on Diamonds in a couple years. Doing well at Worlds or other large comps help gain their popularity thus turning it in to a "large" gym.

Agreed with this, plus the fact that these "mega gyms", if you will, also attract and train the highest caliber of coaches.

You can have the world's best athletes, but without an absolutely stellar coaching staff, you won't be the best team. That's why, despite the fact that individual athletes age-out/switch gyms/quit each season, the same gym's produce outrageously good teams year in and year out. The coaching staff largely remains in place, and they are the key to producing champions.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but unless you can get an extensively experienced and exceptional coaching staff behind a team, it's hard to produce the same results.

I think it's math more than anything. The reality is that there's only a handful of athletes that can perform the max-level skills you need to win a competitive world's division. Having 20 or more of them on your team is even more rare.

I'm not an expert, and this might be completely dumb, but I think it's plausible that you can come out of nowhere, catch lightning in a bottle and make the top-ten in a division if everything breaks right.

But the gap between tenth and first in some of these divisions is pretty steep. I look at some of these results, and I'm seeing teams with no deductions - basically hitting the routine of their lives - finishing 12th or 15th. These are great teams with a ton of great athletes, and their absolute best is probably a significant cut below the best in the world on a less than perfect day.

The point is this - as hard as it is to be great, it's ten times harder to be elite. If anyone knows anything about the English Premier League, the analogy between the EPL and high-level cheer will be pretty obvious.

Yes, and it's quite the pet peeve of mine when someone complains that a team won "just because they're popular". If everyone dressed in the same outfit and was announced as Team A, Team B, etc, I would be willing to bet the results would be the same....I'll end with that before I begin ranting.

Also, could not agree more with the analogy that was brought up between EPL and Worlds level cheerleading. As an avid fan of both, I've definitely noticed that before.
