I have been creating routines for years. But I always just use my creativity and we don't score very well. I watch the other teams and our skills are the same. They're executed the same. Maybe even better, but we don't win. We get close but not close enough.

What it comes down to is not understanding scoring well enough. I wonder if anyone would share with me a resource or somewhere I could go to understand scoring better to properly make my routines to place higher...

We are definitely in the right division for our skills. We're a small gym so everyone goes where they genuinely belong. Not where they can slay, even though they're way above that skill level... And we do ALL the stunts everyone else does. But Im missing something. And I'm pretty sure it's lack of knowledge of score sheets and scoring systems.

Any help would be so appreciated!!!

Most/all companies post their scoring guidelines online. Find the scoring guides for every company you compete with. Learn what skills/how many skills and how many groups/athletes you need to have doing those skills to score in the high range. Design your routine to fit every scoresheet you'll be competing on as well as possible. Decide if you may need to sacrifice difficulty in some areas in order to avoid losing execution points. Bumping up your difficulty range by a point isn't going to do much if you're going to go down a point in execution. Once you've read the scoring guides over and over, if there's things you still aren't clear on, look on the company's website to find the person in charge of judges/scoring. Call or e-mail them and ask your questions. I work for an EP in addition to coaching and I promise that this is very common and generally leads to a lot of success. We'd rather you call ahead and ask questions to better understand the scoresheet prior to the event, than have a coach come stomping up after awards wanting the scoresheets explained to them when it's too late.

Look at your overall routine execution. Having a routine that is visually pleasing makes a huge difference. Having kids sprint across the floor for formation changes is going to hurt you. Lots of downtime is going to hurt you. You want creative/clean transitions and a routine that keeps a steady, upbeat pace. Make sure everyone is not just doing everything well, but that they are doing everything the same. If Suzie hits a high V by bringing her arms up in front of her to hit the motion, but Sally hits a high V by bringing her arms up on the sides of her, it takes away from your overall appeal. Have your flyers pull their body positions in the same way. Once a month, bring in a coach that knows what good execution looks like, but isn't used to looking at your routine. Ask them to nit pick. I know that after spending so much time watching the routine I coach over and over and over, I tend to fixate on certain things and start overlooking other issues. Having a new set of eyes helps refocus.

Biggest thing is which events you are doing. Lets say its Jambrands, totally different than say Varsity or WSA. In Jambrands remember this LDT! Varsity more baskets! WSA, everyone should tumble! It's little quirks which separate each of them. Lets say its Jamfest and you have 20. At some point put up 6 flyers, 3 man groups, all they have to do is pull a lib. That maxes the number, go back to 5 groups and pull body positions. Also throw one extra basket, it can be straight ride, just have it. Feel free to message me and I will be glad to talk to you. I have judged and competed at all of em!

You should try to attend a coaches conference like JamU or USASF Regional meetings. Scoring is gone over in detail, and it really helps. You can also send videos to other coaches that may be able to give you more insight.

I wi be attending Usasf coaching conference this year and am very excited!! Thank you guys so much! That's super helpful! I think my problem
Is just lack of scoring understanding cause our routines rock but I'm missing that finishing touch of meeting what they want... So I think I gotta do some studying and see what I can figure out! Thanks so much!

Just remember that the USASF conference doesn't show you how to score high on any score sheet! It only shows you what is legal and illegal. The event sets their own standards based off of the USASF rules. Knowing the rules of USASF will not score you high. Which events do u go to? Anything Varsity, Justin has always been amazing at helping understand and Jeremy at Jamfest is as well! If you go WSA Darren will be glad to tell you!

I just printed varsity scoring guide and cheer sports. We're in Cali! :) I can't find JAMZ (we only do a few) but I feel like their scoring is WAYYY different Than the others. Is encore apart of varsity as well? I'm trying to make binders for my coaches with all the score guides. This is our third season so were doing our homework to give the kids the best chance!

I'm going to blame it on it being 11pm here... What are LDTs?

Load ins, dismounts and transitions. Remember they have to be level appropriate to count. For ex. Level 4 is a full up, now in a pyramid you full up to 2 legged extension. That is an LDT not a body position. After the full up you would have to do a lib at extension. It's different but not impossible.

Haha it does but it takes a while and a lot of homework ;P

BTW... I see that you guys are in Merced! I'm going to be living in Atwater this summer! Small world. Do you have any open gyms that I would be able to attend? (I'm 23, and sometimes people only let the kids play)

I would call JamFest, ask for Griffen and tell him Chad said to explain the "moo cow" routine to you! Which beat our "pig" routine, but it was rigged! We had the tumbling! Plus a one man!
