Hi! My cheer gym had tryouts this sunday. I've never done allstar cheer before, but I do school cheering. I'm a really weak tumbler, I can do a cartwheel and roundoff and sort of a front walkover, but I just cannot get my backbend kickover. I tried it in my house and I tried to have my mom spot me and she actually fell on me after I fell haha, so I'm not sure if I should just try without a spot. I have a standing backbend and I can come up, but I just try to kick, dont get enough power then panic and usually fall on my head. Any help?

If you don't feel like you're ready to do it by yourself, then don't do it. Maybe ask someone to spot you :) I had the same problem at my tryouts with a different skill that i've never tried before... And I fell. And i'm sure that you could work on it and gain other skills over the summer. Good luck!

Whether you get your backbend kickover or not will not affect what placement you get. Without a bhs you will be level 1 so try out with what you have and work on your skills in a gym environment all summer!

Try and put your feet closet to your hands and then kick over. It may take a couple tries at first but then you'll get it :) I'm working on my bwo right now.

Try to really push through your shoulders when you are in your bridge. It helps to get your momentum going backwards so you can get your feet up and over your hands.

You can do a bridge against a wall (feet against a wall), arms by your ears and hands and feet together as close a possible. Now put one foot against the wall and push away from it and push through your shoulders.
Then work your way up to having the foot as low on the wall as possible and then without it.

THe biggest problem I usually see if kids who don't push their shoulders back when kicking over. Their hands are stretched out on the floor, then shoulders, then head and body, whereas your shoulders should be over or past your hands to help move your body weight in the direction you are kicking over. Not sure if that made sense. Keep pushing your shoulders in the direction you are looking to move in while kicking over. It takes a lot of flexibility, so stretch them out too

This is a great advice. Most of my girls struggeling with this skill don´t have a good bridge/enough shoulder flexibility.
