Not a big cheer fan, but I totally respect these cheerleaders on ESPN.

After watching these cheerleaders compete on ESPN, I take back everything I said about cheerleaders not being athletes.

In VA it's pretty accepted because there's a high population of Allstars (I wore a bow to an amusement park and got recognized by some other gyms this past weekend). But for the poor people that don't know...
I've literally been asked if I was a clown before. Also been asked a couple times if I was in a parade. I think people usually assume like a majorette if nothing else.
But yeah when I tell people my life plans are to "coach cheerleading" they think like rec. So I've changed it to I coach cheerleading and gymnastics

Let me add to that, my mom works in this little sports bar in town. But they always have ESPN on. So when Worlds comes on they're always like "Oh my god look at those girls" and my moms always like "Yep thats what my kid does" and now whenever I go in there they always ask me how my "squad" is doing

One time for a homework assignment, I had to write letters to myself from an imaginary French pen pal and I got points taken off for making them a cheerleader.

Off topic, but one time my Spanish teacher (who is from Peru) told me that they don't have cheerleaders in South America. I was like "I'm 100% sure they exist" and she's like "no that's just in the US nowhere else has cheerleaders" okay...

When people ask me what kind of cheer CP does, I ask them if they've ever seen cheer on ESPN. That's what she does---well, sort of since she's L2 but they're duly impressed and it stops the nonsense questions.

I usually say my daughter is a "competitive cheerleader". Often people will respond with "you mean like on tv, like on ESPN?" Mine is now level 3 but like you said I just say yes. No need to confuse them.

I've posted this before, but I taught a lesson for my AP Eng 12 teacher one day about my tips for college writing. One of the tips was about sending a cohesive message regardless of the discussion, evidences, examples Etc. the message (thesis) must always be clear and consistent.

I'm not one to lecture so these different tips were done in different (seemingly non related) little activities that they then had to try and determine what the tip was. For example, in one activity they had to compare nutrition labels and determine which foods were the best. The writing tip was to "write lean" (economy of words) and just throwing "junk" in it to make it long made for a "fat" but "unhealthy" paper.

So anyway, to exemplify the "all functions must support a cohesive thesis" I had the listen to one song from the "Japanese noise rock" genre and they to glean the message. They couldn't. Pretty sure there isn't one, which is part of the reason that song is terrible.

Then I said, what if you could mix up parts of probably 14 different songs, 30 different sound effects and a bunch of random voice overs... Lets see if you get a clear message from THIS.

...and then I played Top Gun unlimited Coed 2010 because you have to be deaf to miss THAT thesis.

After it finished one kid raised their hand and said...."I sure hope they won."

They got the message. :)

I'm sorry but every time I read this thread title I see "potheads." lol!!

Ok, back to topic... Having just finished our first year, I was amused at people's reaction. Trying to explain to her Texas grandfather when we went to Dallas that, no, dad, she's not going to be a stripper when she grows up, to watching my aunt and cousins watching her perform, to the girl at a local restaurant acknowleding how hard what she does is, I've done everything from bang my head on the wall to beam with pride to laugh at reactions!

I get this all the time! I'm British and whenever somebody I meet finds out I'm a cheerleader they're like 'they have cheerleaders in the UK? I thought that was just an American thing?'.

Do you still have that teacher? Because i so feel the urge to match you with some french cheerleaders and write real letters to show your teacher. One team is making a documentary about them...in french...show him that for extra grades:)

Before this year I haven't been able to afford all stars. So I bide my time filling in for teams. Before December, my mom never really got into it. But she went to watch me compete at CHEERSPORT- Birmingham...it was her first competition... She filmed it for me and all she could say was "oh wow!!! No way!!" In the video. Even after the competition she wouldn't stop talking about how impressive and fast-paced everything is. she talked about how she never thoughT it would be that intense..and also didn't really understand why we would cheer on teams that we were competing against.and go crazy whenever SOMEONE ELSE hits a stunt. All I could say was "welcome to all stars"

We are the best, or silver black and blue. Cowboys

The best moments are, when we drive home from a competition on a bus and stop at a McDonalds or Burger King and there are other buses with cheerleaders.
The workers and the non-cheer customers are always overwhelmed by so many girls with bows and glitter make-up.
Imagine a small fast food restaurant with 100+ hungry cheerleaders. At one competition some walked through the drive in because the lines inside were too long.
Sometimes me or cp forget to take out the bow after practise and go to a restaurant or supermarket and wonder why people are staring at us - till we recognize it´s the big bow :D
To be honest: When people ask what sport i´m doing, sometimes i just say coaching gymnastics or acrobatics.
It´s so much easier than to try to explain what cheerleading is, and no i didn´t hold a pom pom for a looong time, i don´t wear sexy boots and a bra dancing on a sideline nor does my cp and i won´t give you a presentation of: "Give me an A!"......
And it avoid questions like: Oh, you´re a cheerleader? Can you show me something?
Yes. I will build a 2,5 high pyramid right here in the restaurant...by myself. :banghead:
When my oldest CP is asked to "show something" she'll whip out a standing back whether she has jeans or shorts on. The non-cheer people love it!
