I keep hearing people talk about Open and I've never understanded it... Does it mean that their are no limitations on age? No max number of people per team? Especially now that there is such a thing as Open 4...

And while we're here, I have some knowledge but can somebody clarify the rules/limitations of International? 18 and over, but is there an age cap? At what point are you 'too old' to cheer? Are there any different rules for International 5 vs. Senior 5?

With the old divisions - Limited, Semi-limited, Unlimited - were those just the same thing as Small, Medium, Large?

And last one, I promise! I was updating my Cheer Music library and noticed somebody had teams listed as "Novice" "Intermediate" "Advanced" "Beginner" etc. Were these 'divisions' ever used? I have never heard of them yet they were tacked onto the end of popular World Cup and Top Gun mixes?

For a few of the questions...

Open and International are one and the same... The correct title for these divisions is International Open.
Level 5 and 6 in this division have been around for a while. (International) Open 4 is actually a trial International Open division, but in Level 4.

Age Gride.
Level 4: 17+
Level 5: 15+ (IASF 14+)
Level 6: 17+

No age cap.

At what point are you 'too old' to cheer?
That would be a personal decision, I would say.

See USASFRules.com for specifics. But technically speaking, there is no difference in the rules for International 5 vs. Senior 5.

Yep it was switched over in 2006ish I believe. A lot of our older banners in the gym still say "youth large advanced" "senior small novice" and etc...

Correct me if I'm wrong, USASF has reversed the decision to increase the age of IO5 and IOC5 in the US by each year. I thought I read/heard somewhere that the bottom age will continue to be 14 across the board?

If I'm not mistaken, Open 4 is just Open 4, not International Open 4. There's not really much of a difference, but I think International means worlds.

More of a reply to the OP, but the open divisions have a max of 24 people on the team.

Pretty much. The USASF decided to go with what the international community sets which is currently 14 and uses the year of the competition method for determining age.

Which "year of competition" is the age based on? I know other countries seasons vary drastically from the US.

I think it's just whatever year the competition occurs in. Like I'm 16, but I'll turn 17 in December. So I could have competed at Worlds 2013 on a level 6 team, because I'll turn 17 in the year of the competition. But i couldnt compete with that team until January 1st - so no early season competitions- because I wasn't going to turn 17 that year. I believe this is trying to help with the different seasons, so they arent bound by August, just by the year. At least that's how I understand it.

Don't think of seasons. Just think about the year the event you are attending is in. If an athlete turns the right age at any point during 2014, they can compete at any event in 2014, but cannot compete at events that happen during the 2013-14 season that take place in 2013.

I was just going off the age grids for the 12/13 season ;) But yes, you're right.

So, for example, if a 13 year old is competing on an IO5 team, and turns 14 during the year of Worlds, they cannot compete until events happening in 2014?

Correct. For IASF the season doesn't matter (mostly cuz the international teams have a very different season from in America)

All that matters is what year the competition is in and if you are turning the age in that year.
