As a new flyer I would always stick my butt out and then my couch told me to think of "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes". Now that I know that I barley ever fall. On the mat my back spot says it in my ear before we go up

To be tight in your legs and get more "spring" in your tumbling, i was told to squeese my heals together. It really helps - Try going up on your toes regullarly, and then when you squeese your heals together. The second time you'll feel that your entire backside is tight.
 
This is something that I valued a lot when I cheered but now I think it translates well into life itself..
My old gym prides itself on teaching kids every stunt position. New kids would walk in and say "I'm a base" and my coach would just say "Well, today you're going to learn to be a backspot because that's what we need." I cannot tell you how many times I heard "We teach versatility!" I just find it to be something important for not only taking one for the team and stepping up but also moving on into life and being a versatile person as well.

AMEN there are girls on my HS team who refuse to learn to do anything but what they think they should be... like you'd rather nugget in the back than stunt? Reevaluate. I can main, secondary, and backspot. If I was small enough I would learn to fly but... I'm not. Sure, I might be put in a main basing position 99% of the time (although I back on my AS team), but if they need an extra back or secondary I can step in. I hate when people won't. :mad:
 
Honestly the best advice id ever gotten is do not listen to the parent section.

Yes sometimes we could hear them shouting positives, but half the time hearing them gasp saying 'omg did you see that?!' 'Why is she even there?' 'I wish they would put my daughter in a group where they knew what they were doing' really did not help anything at all. More times then not its better to let coaches talk things out with the kids then have 'mommy knows best' but in every ten seconds

That's exactly the premise behind it! I haven't cheered in a year but I find myself almost daily saying "I haven't done that before.. but I can try" and that really is the point. Putting yourself out there for the sake of others.
