Remember, on the Varsity system, we only tell you how to get into the HIGH range, but we don't tell you how to max out that score.
And we actually have fewer subjective categories than last year. But we applied descriptive paragraphs to help people understand what to look for.
Okay...for the scoring grid impaired, explain this concept to me. (Being serious here)

So what's listed in the grid just tells you what it takes to qualify for that range. I get that. But after you've qualified for the high range, how do you max out? Is that an inherently comparative concept based on who else is competing in your division...

I.e. both teams met the high range for running tumbling but team A had 12 more level appropriate skills than team B therefore they "maxed out" and hence had a higher raw score?

Is that how that works?

I guess I'm not really understanding where a "raw score" that shows up on score sheets is calculated from, which to me seems to be the best indictator of whether a team maxed out across the board or not.

That's probably a terribly complicated question, with a book of an answer, but that's probably the biggest thing I don't "get." Where does a raw score come from and how do you get a higher one than another team if both of you are qualified for the high range across the board?

to get into the "high range" you do what is listed out on the sheet to getting into the top of the range depends on what you are specifically doing and how you do it and with how many bases you do it with, for example a double down in level 4 from a half vs from an extension, both meet the level appropriate dismount requirement but one should score higher but it depends on the subjective opinion of the judge as to what they think is more difficult

You are so wise, Theapia.

Haha...I tweeted about the whole Theapia thing. Completely made my night. I can't wait to tell her that she isn't who she thinks she is, I am

USASF defines a 1/4 turn cradle from a single leg stunt a level 2 dismount, but on the link provided Varsity is defining it as a level 3 dismount...?

This whole subject is so hard for me. I read these scoring guidelines over and over and even tho I have coached all stars for years and even own my own gym, I still find so many of these almost beyond difficult to comprehend, due to the language and ways they are written. USASF rules feel like Greek and I'm almost never able to decode many of them... Inversions are the worse! i almost never understand what the heck they're talking about... The scoring guidelines, some things are very clear cut and others I'm so confused I feel like giving up.

It's really sad. I know. Trust me. You'd think I was fluent in these things... And I try! Hard! But I just can't seem to understand it all... Maybe I'm just not smart enough. We have levels 1-4, all ages ranges. And we go to many different companies. varsity, JAMZ, cheersport... And they're all different. I honestly feel like I can't get it, no matter how hard I try.

One of the guys on here offered to make me a breakdown of how to score in the high ranges, for the companies we attend, and I'm so grateful to him. I'm gonna owe him like a $100 Starbucks card after, as I seem to be failing epically at doing it myself. It's very discouraging for it to feel like only the large gyms with all the inside connections and even sometimes are part of making these qualifications, are the ones who fully understand it all, thus ALWAYS WINNING, irregardless of falls, boundaries and other things that you would THINK would drop you a place or two. But it doesn't, because they know the scoring guidelines perfectly. Hats off to them... I mean that sincerely..

It feels hopeless to ever understand it all. I want to learn.. And do better. We're going to attend the Usasf conference to understand rules better and next year attend varsity conference (missed this one ). That's a step I guess... Sorry. This started as a cry for help and ended up venting. Lol. Thanks for listening and any help on how to be more fluent all around on the scoring would be greatly appreciated!!!

Aren't Varsity, JAMZ and Cheersport all the same now? I'd recommend challenging your staff. Have everyone read through everything and meet up and discuss. If there are specific questions this board I'm sure has someone who can help. Good luck this season!!!

I definitely think that's the way to go too. the scoresheets can for sure be confusing. at the gym i coach at, the coaches for each team are meeting with the cheer director to go over the jam brands and varsity score sheets to discuss anything we might not understand, and to talk about how our particular team can max out on both scoresheets. i think it's definitely good to discuss - people might understand something on the scoresheet you're not as comfortable with, and vice versa.
