I'd like to start by saying I don't post often, so I did search, and try and inform myself of what has already posted and been said about this before I created this post so I am sorry if I missed something!

I was curious as to if people on here thought that the international divisions (in particular, Canadian teams) have grown to such a size that there should be a Canadian Trials, just as there is a US trials (on the saturday of worlds).

I do (did ... :( ) compete in the IOAG5 division and so although my points may be slightly biased, I want to know if I am thinking completely crazy or not!

1. There were 11 Canadian teams in the 'Day 1' round in the IOAG5 division. There were 6 teams in the IO6 (from Canada), and 8 teams in IOC6 (from Canada).

Focusing mostly on the IOAG5 division:

2. The judges, are now narrowing down 11 teams to top 3 (for finals)
3. The US athletes, come the 'day 1' round, already have 1 worlds performance under their belt, which in return could reduce 'game day' nerves and anxiety. With this being said, if a US team with a decently clean routine, good skill set, and a POTENTIAL for top 5 etc. had a slight bobble, or a touch down (in prelims), that wont necessarily hurt their score enough to take them out of the top 10, thus allowing them to compete (with theoretically less nerves) on "Day 1" with a greater confidence of hitting a clean routine to advance to 'day 2'.
4. Not having the opportunity to do a prelims round, I know my team had a fluke accident day one, which diminished our chances for qualifying for finals (unfortunately we didn't qualify) . NOW- with that being said, many factors had to be taken in, but I believe nerves/anxiety played a huge role in the events that occurred on day 1. With the opportunity available for us to compete in a prelims round, that factor could've been reduced significantly.
5. With all above being taken into consideration, I COMPLETELY understand that the number of teams that need to be reduced to top 10 in US prelims is much more than what we have in Canada, however, with that much volume (in regards to US teams), there also could be a lot bigger of a 'divide' between the 'truly competitive- placing top 10' IOAG5 teams, and the maybe not so 'competitive' IOAG5 team.

I tried to be as clear as possible! Hope this makes sense.
Also, maybe the idea of a 'Canadian prelims' is a few years down the road (or maybe not) but with the exponential growth of the Canadian teams in this division do you see it becoming a reality within the near future?

I mean, the IOAG5 for US Trials is so small.
They literally only cut one or two teams going into top ten. If they have a similar number for Canadian teams, it makes sense to me.

i think one of the biggest problems is that teams from random countries make day 2 because they're the only ones from the country. this makes it a LOT easier to place decently day 2, because often the teams that place 9th or 10th day 2 wouldnt make it if it was based on just the top 10 of the whole division without regards to country. i always kind of think of canadian teams having an advantage since its a lot easier to qualify, but never thought of it as a disadvantage of not having prelims performance under their belt

Canadian teams only really have an advantage for IOC5 for the whole day 2 thing
In IOAG5 our 3 qualifying teams came 2nd , 3rd and 5th and actually we were at the same disadvantage as the american teams in the sense that several who didn't make finals were top 10/top 15 worthy
IOAG6 one of our teams came 1st and the other two were somewhere in the top 10 but it was not like they had "bumped" a whole bunch of American teams for day 2 (if any...)
and same in IOC6, there was not a huge difference without those american teams who "didn't qualify" since they were not even top 8 worthy (I am pretty sure Top 3 was 3 different countries)

I agree that someday they may need to tweak the system because very soon we may be outnumbering the number of US teams in some international divisions

for example, (granted we didn't score when it counted... however,) at worlds we scored a 204, and needed a 215 to make finals. HOWEVER the following weekend, we scored a 230 (with relatively similar score sheets i believe). Needless to say we were VERY capable of qualifying for finals, and competing in finals for a top 10 placement. However, if, we had a prelims round (not saying it could've prevented our fluke..) but it defiantly would've diminished some nerves IMO.
@cheeranswers I dont necessarily agree that it is easier for us to qualify (in regards to IOAG5) simply cause it was proven that when we didn't HIT PERFECTLY we simply didn't make it, and same would've gone for the US teams in this division. It all depended on the performance that was placed on the mat that day.. right?

ETA: these scores are from what i remember, don't know if its exact!
