I'd like to start by saying I don't post often, so I did search, and try and inform myself of what has already posted and been said about this before I created this post so I am sorry if I missed something!
I was curious as to if people on here thought that the international divisions (in particular, Canadian teams) have grown to such a size that there should be a Canadian Trials, just as there is a US trials (on the saturday of worlds).
I do (did ... ) compete in the IOAG5 division and so although my points may be slightly biased, I want to know if I am thinking completely crazy or not!
1. There were 11 Canadian teams in the 'Day 1' round in the IOAG5 division. There were 6 teams in the IO6 (from Canada), and 8 teams in IOC6 (from Canada).
Focusing mostly on the IOAG5 division:
2. The judges, are now narrowing down 11 teams to top 3 (for finals)
3. The US athletes, come the 'day 1' round, already have 1 worlds performance under their belt, which in return could reduce 'game day' nerves and anxiety. With this being said, if a US team with a decently clean routine, good skill set, and a POTENTIAL for top 5 etc. had a slight bobble, or a touch down (in prelims), that wont necessarily hurt their score enough to take them out of the top 10, thus allowing them to compete (with theoretically less nerves) on "Day 1" with a greater confidence of hitting a clean routine to advance to 'day 2'.
4. Not having the opportunity to do a prelims round, I know my team had a fluke accident day one, which diminished our chances for qualifying for finals (unfortunately we didn't qualify) . NOW- with that being said, many factors had to be taken in, but I believe nerves/anxiety played a huge role in the events that occurred on day 1. With the opportunity available for us to compete in a prelims round, that factor could've been reduced significantly.
5. With all above being taken into consideration, I COMPLETELY understand that the number of teams that need to be reduced to top 10 in US prelims is much more than what we have in Canada, however, with that much volume (in regards to US teams), there also could be a lot bigger of a 'divide' between the 'truly competitive- placing top 10' IOAG5 teams, and the maybe not so 'competitive' IOAG5 team.
I tried to be as clear as possible! Hope this makes sense.
Also, maybe the idea of a 'Canadian prelims' is a few years down the road (or maybe not) but with the exponential growth of the Canadian teams in this division do you see it becoming a reality within the near future?
