How is Indians a racial slur? That has no negative connotation to it whatsoever. I consider a name like Red Skins kind of offensive but not Indians.

I guarantee if you called a native from where I'm from "Indian" bad things would probably go down. That may be different where you live

Thank you all again for enlightening me on this topic, and thank you for stressing how important of an issue this is without coming down too hard. I don't post here often, but I have been on this board for a few years and I have grown to respect many of your opinions.

At this point (other than this thread) the only place this team name was mentioned was in an email that was sent out to the gym letting them know that the gym would have an IOC 6 team this year. The team evals are not even until July 13, so the team has not been formed yet. I spoke to the owner at the gym last night and he admitted that while they had heard the term, they did not fully understand the meaning behind it. He admitted that it was an uneducated decision and they would be taking the steps to correct their mistake. They will be issuing an email to the gym with an apology and they will be changing the team name.

I'll post the new name when I know it :)
I think it is wonderful that the coaches are agreeing to change the name and are willing to issue an apology. It doesn't sound like they were purposefully trying to be offensive. I am usually on the side that people get offended too easily but in this case its a good thing it was changed. Good luck with your season! :D

makes sense, although apparently im just completely out of the loop.. never even heard of the movie..

how could you have not heard of the movie, it only has one of sexiest/hottest male actors ever in it... lol. it wasnt that great a movie to be honest, but anything with Leonardo DiCaprio, im willing to cough up my money for and watch.

as in terms of the name, i can see they were trying to be creative, but i dont think using the word blood in any reference is good for an allstar team name.

@kristenthegreat - thank you bringing up DeBeers...horrific monopoly, anyone? Seriously, if y'all researched just a little bit, you, like I, would refuse to wear diamonds in any way. If you think wearing fur is bad...phew. Trust. The negative human impact of the diamond market is the nastiest business imaginable. Worse than Illinois cheer.
Thank goodness for CZs and moissanite!

I have a diamond ring and I'm well versed in the history. My diamond is from Canada, so it's not from a conflict country. And DeBeers is just doing business. Maybe slimy business but it's capitalism and they have every right to stash away diamonds in a vault and create the illusion of rarity. I don't treat my ring or stone as an investment that we'll make money off of and I don't have a problem spending money on something I'll wear every day for the rest of my life.

It's ironic. Native is ok but not Indian. Both are fine with me, I find it fascinating the differences in what is ok from north and south, country to country and city to city.

Very true, I am part native as well & neither offend me, but I know people who would be offended. But I guess my point is if a team walked out with the name Asians, or whatever, it would be an issue. (At least I think it would)

you said "where I'm from..." so I was just wondering where the term "Indian" was offensive.

Understandable. I'm sure things we say here would be quite offensive some where else. At my school referring to someone (a native) as an "Indian" would get you in serious trouble, so having it as a team name is weird for me

I also wear diamonds but I think she was referring to much worse things DeBeers is involved in. Even though all their diamonds go through the Kimberly process now, their move to Botswana is a whole different set of horrors.

They really are a horrible company. There's a reason they have to be so shady to get their products into the US.

Here in Florida, where I live and Alabama, where I was born, it's not that big of a deal. Many universities, schools and teams use Indian names. It's because the history and lifestyles, for example cuisine, comes from the Indian heritage.
