All-Star Instagram Problem Re: Cheerlebrity Fanfic

I've kind of been combing through Instagrams policies on reporting photos. I feel like this could fall under a privacy violation, but the affected parties have to report it themselves. All any of us can do it flag the photo as inappropriate

I showed this to Officer CheerDad and he said the same thing as INeverStopCheering - about all that can be done is it can be reported to Instagram. The user can be flagged - there is a place on Instagram's site under the Help Center which explains how to do that. It looks like these postings are in violation of the Community Guidelines where it says "It is not an appropriate place to abuse, attack, harass, or impersonate others. If we receive valid complaints about your conduct, we’ll send a warning or disable your account. Alternatively, we’d recommend users block all meanies & trolls to prevent further issues."

Ok - Officer CheerDad has taken a closer look at the postings. Does anyone know if the picture "True Love" heading up these entries is one of the people in the stories? If so, the postings may be a violation of Texas' Online Impersonation law.

Yes. But my issue is, if they took the good attention, shouldn't they take the bad? If this was a story of, I don't know, signing and selling smelly bows would I be up in arms about it? Reason #411 why I don't allow my kid to give autographs, send pictures, etc. never know what it might lead to. Signed, happily anonymous.

When the "bad" attention involves inappropriate content of this nature, the answer is no, they shouldn't take it. I understand the whole "they put themselves out there..." argument (although I don't always agree with it because it's not always the case) but there are some lines that shouldn't be crossed and this is one of them.

Oh god. Originally I just read the first three "chapters" and decided it was terrible, but I decided to read the whole thing and wow, this is worse than I thought and I hope the girls mentioned in it don't read it.

And some girl comments on the last "chapter" saying "these are amazing and you have natural talent" ...what...?

I agree, this isn't just "Wow I hate so and so she's not even that good, did you see her bust at X event..." I would say that sort of criticism and bad attention is just part of being on a well known team. But inappropriate stuff like this involving minors is a different story.

I know! I've seen elementary schoolers write better fictional stories than that. It only popped up on my feed at around chapter 8 (I don't check Instagram all that often) but this person has taken it to a point (the whole pregnancy thing) that is way to far. If someone did something like that to me I'd be mortified

Lol agree. Like all the sentences are short and choppy, and then it's like "three months later" I think
I would be so mortified if someone wrote that about me too even though it's supposed to be fake. Just terrible, and the person writing it is probably super proud of it, smh.

I agree it's inappropriate and disgusting. However, I've always felt it was inappropriate for a 15yo to have hundreds of thousands of followers on social media. Many threads have questioned where this popularity would lead. Did anyone think it might never lead to this?

I saw that and actually had to hold myself back from a rude comment

I don't think anyone would've ever thought some random creep would make up illogical stories about them drinking, doing the dirty, and making up fictional lives for these athletes no. This goes beyond creepy.

I respectfully disagree. As a parent who is involved with this daily, a fictional story is not the worst thing we worry about. Sadly, it's the non-fiction actions that keep us watching out for each others kids, sitting in the parking lot during practices, sneaking athletes out back doors...

Honestly no, I never would have thought of anything like this, I didn't even know people wrote Fanfics about real people. That's why I was so startled and creeped out when I read it. I've predicted a lot of things for these kids, magazine covers, endorsements, products (posters, bows etc), being bothered for photographs and autographs, even being crazily pursued/stalked by "fangirls" the same way Justin Bieber or 1D are.

But no, this one never really crossed my mind.

I feel like people don't do this for other famous athletes. Like I don't get the impression there were/are creepy fanfics about Shawn or Nastia, or even other famous kids like the Kardashians, 1D, other TV/movie stars. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've never encountered this phenom before, writing fictional stories about real people, as if you ARE them.

We live in celebrity worship world. I feel like with the exception of some people, teenagers born in the 21st century or a year or two before are for whatever reason, in love with celebrity more than the average child. I'm not to far from that age group but I can tell you that the teen celebrity obsession was not like this when I was little. Maybe it's because now if your favorite singer is Ariana Grande, you can find her twitter, youtube, watch her show, listen to her music. You have more information to feed off of. Cheerlebrities for some girls in this industry is just another fandom for them to obsess over. It's even better because this fandom is realistic, these aren't celebrities and the girls interested can easily follow them on social media or meet them. Fanfic is just the result of that. It's not fair to the athletes because the are just living their lives. What they do on the weekend (cheer) shouldn't mean they can't live life like normal kids.

Ugh I have soo much to say about these things but I've ranted enough
