Hello everyone,

Looking for some healthy discussion on different gyms policies on protecting logos, images, and perceptions of gyms. By images I mean mental images and how people view other gyms.

Recently I was on Facebook and someone I know who cheers for a well known gym worse his uniform top to an event that I think if I was the owner of the gym I would ask them to take down the picture and not wear the uniform in public in that manner.

Out of respect for my friendship with this person and mine and the gym owners privacy Im not going to show the picture but I was like curious what gyms, and owners do to make sure stuff like that doesn't happen ?

We have an image policy that the kids have to adhere to. No wearing their uniforms/gyms logo to parties or while doing anything that might misrepresent the gym. We tell them that when they are in the uniform or practice wear they have to be role models, that kind of thing. We make sure to remind them through out the season because a few will "forget".

Why would anyone voluntarily wear their uniform top to any event where they would be being a bad role model? Like if I was gonna go to someone's party, my number one outfit choice would not be my uni top.
A. It's not really all that comfortable
B. It's not really all that cute
Like if you're in the club, why on Earth would you be wearing a cheerleading uniform?

I would have to say when I was first introduced to cheer, ACE had me in awe. After competing and meeting more big gyms, I still felt the down to earth attitude of Happy is the key. He is nice, answers questions and any athlete you talk to gives him high regards. His beliefs along with JR are what helps separate them from the rest and why they are as successful as they are.

I've never really heard of this happening before in az, cause honostly, uniforms arent super comfy. I only wear my uni out at competitions or if we go out to eat after(covered of course, I don't want anything getting on my white top!)

When I cheered it was to be respectful while in uniform or any gym attire ...... The only thing about people trading shirts now is that someone can do something so stupid with another gyms shirt on and that gym might get judged by that persons actions

I see it as it's an honor to wear that uniform and to represent your program. If you're going to deliberately do something as silly as that, then you are old enough to take the punishment.

Our gym has a code of conduct which includes a list of acceptable and unacceptable behavior to use as a guideline. When in uniform or even just traveling for a competition you are expected to adhere to these guidelines. The owners and coaches also patrol social media accounts and will ask kids to remove objectionable postings, especially if could be construed as slanderous and aimed at other gyms. Lets face it, image in this industry is important and if you or your gym members are talking trash or making cryptic insinuations of wrong doing by other gyms your reputation won't be very good.

The discussion on team logos reminds me of Spirit of Hope this year when an unlicensed bow maker was selling bows with the logos of the gyms who were competing on them. Randy from ACX got wind of it and went to check it out. He asked them remove the ACX bows since they were not licensed and spread the word to other gym owners to take whatever action they wanted with the bow maker. Since the owners own the logos as well you cannot make tshirts, bows, bags etc without the owners approval. It's even worse when you're trying to sell them for a personal profit.

This exactly. Our gym was not very happy about this same situation. We are told, explicitly, at the beginning of the season that the gym name, logo, etch are trademarked and not to reproduce it on anything. The owner tries very hard to maintain a consistant look and style. That means no homemade tshirts, car stickers, anything. I can think of a situation where a mom made her own warmups with the gym name on the back of the jacket along with a megaphone and her kid's name. Quite frankly it looked as hokey as all get out, and I can understand where the gym owner wouldn't want her gym represented like that. My advice to anyone who asks me about making anything with your gym name, logo, or team name is to run it through the senior most person possible before you do it- preferably in email so you have it in writing! Chances are the gym will be happy to create what it is that you would like to see, and if they give you the go-ahead to order/make something, you won't get in trouble.

We saw them there and were wondering ourselves how they were able to use all the gyms' logos...I guess they just did it without permission, huh? Glad we didn't buy one...
