All-Star Division I And Division Ii At Worlds - Big Gym Separation

Some event producers get a huge number of teams to go to their event making it next to impossible for a new or smaller event producer to ever catch up. Having that many teams allows them to do many things with their event that a new, smaller EP simply can't hope to match. NCA's massive pool of registration fees allow them to rent a huge facility with tremendous lighting and staging. This creates a huge incentive for teams to go to their event instead of a smaller, newer event producer. Sure, it is a "free market", but is it really "fair" to those smaller EPs to have to compete head-to-head against someone like NCA or Varsity who have so many built-in advantages?

Should we be figuring out ways to minimize how many teams go exclusively to Varsity events to more evenly spread out the teams among the various event producers?

While we are at it, the economies of scale available to the Varsity uniform company aren't available to someone starting a new uniform company either . . .

Who is John Galt?
...I seriously did not think it was possible to like you any more than I already did.

But then you quoted my favorite Ayn Rand book and my soul wept with joy. I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

The only thing I can say is that we need to find another way to stop athletes from leaving small gyms and clustering at big gyms... But this isn't the way to do it.

this is kind of like saying we need to stop people from purchasing KIA cars instead of Hondas.

as much as that sounds awesome clearly isnt going to happen.

I'd be curious to find out if USASF has a plan for how the dollars/bids would work. Because if the teams that always get paid Worlds bids on the large gym ticket didn't have all those dozens of little gyms to pay their way with their oft-ridiculed "they don't deserve to be here" At Large bids....would there be as many paid bids in D1? I suppose USASF would just continue to take the money from the D2 side, wherein the real Worlds profit lies.

I think I get what you mean, not quiet sure, but I hope this is the right answer! They are keeping the same amount of bids being handed out. The change in it though is that the small gyms get to choose if they want to compete in Division 1 or Division 2 at Worlds

Good lord I leave the country for a week and have 15 pages of this thread to read through.

Alas, I persevered!

That being said, I have a different take. I don't know that it's about fairness to athletes, leveling playing fields, increasing competition or growing the sport.

I think it's about the machine that us Worlds trying to stay relevant.

Maybe this works and the fire is lit for Worlds all over again, but @NEsteven mentioned looking ahead to 2020.

I think with the sudden fervor over anything new and different (specifically things like the CL when we still don't have any real specifics other than a heart-stopping spectacle of a lineup) Worlds figured out they better do "something" if they even want to exist in 2020.

So put whatever spin on it the industry wants to make it seem more warm, fuzzy, inviting etc.... This is about Worlds trying to stay alive as the industry continues remarkable growth on its own. Maybe it will work, maybe not... But to me they've heard the masses shout about the necessity of change.

That is one of several options people have proposed here, but there are also other opinions. I don't think USASF is committed to any particular approach, or even to moving ahead with a divisional split at all. They put it here for us to discuss so they could get our feedback, so please feel free to put your own opinion out there. It's nice getting a fresh point of view once in a while.

Coolest doesn't mean best. Check KBB, NADA, Edmunds, etc. for the best, most dependable, and most reliable cars and see how quickly that list will change. ;)

I understand the desire to keep up w/the growth and expansion and try to maintain a competitive market for the future, but I also feel like this would take away from the prestige of Worlds. I see Worlds like the Olympics of the sport, but only so many people can qualify to compete at the Olympics. I thought that was the lure of Worlds to begin with?

I feel it's great to give girls an option to actually win worlds. But then its not "undisputed champion of the world" I would rather the feeling of being THE best in the world rather than sharing the crown.... IDK maybe its just me!

i originally was all for this idea.. but i am starting to get mixed feelings. we spend months on here debating and arguing over the fact that there are too many "nationals" and it's too easy to get a title. so our solution is to make it also easier to get a worlds title?

i don't know about this.
exactly, every other comp boasts the name of a "national champion" but the only time I would feel like a champ would be during NCA. Making worlds easier to win would just take some pride away from the ring.

Funny thing...if this was pitched as adding an elite division (instead of adding D2), it probably would be a much easier sell.

Alright, so the new proposal is

We will create a new d1 division exclusively for gyms that have at least 176 kids in their program, 2 worlds teams, or have placed top 3 in the last 3 years.
