Even if you live in Atlanta area you have to pay for a room? If so, that doesn't seem right
I haven't read it but they may. Battle at the Capitol was like that. We are 30 miles from the comp location but if you didn't stay in their hotels the price per athlete was higher. I don't know if this is the same deal.

GWCC is a state owned facility and by Cheersport adopting the "Play and Stay" policy they are able to forecast how much money it can bring into the area. Those events that are able to guarantee they are bringing in a certain number of people will be given first priority for event dates because, the state can then estimate tax revenue generated in the area. State owned or not, I can see this becoming mandatory for EP's to provide this type of information or lose their priority on event dates or being forced to pay higher fees to rent their space. These events are the best way for cities to generate tax revenue without raising taxes on their residents. I see this as government insuring they are getting the most tax revenue possible for an event, and by adopting "Play and Stay" Cheersport is making itself attractive to the state of Georgia.

I just checked their website. Nowhere does it say if you live in Ga that you have to book a hotel. It says if you are staying at a hotel that you have to go through their booking people. I don't like it. I see why though. But anything does not really allow for customer choice irritates me. Perhaps they should work on their elevator issues for special needs athletes and parking troubles as well.

USAV volleyball regional qualifiers have the same policy and similar roster checks are done.

Oh ... so that's why I had to put my cp's name down the last time I made reservations through a group hotel reservation company. Hmmm, I didn't put down the name of the other athlete sharing a hotel room with us ... as far as I know that didn't end up causing problems for the team. Possibly just a certain percentage of a gym's athletes actually need to be registered through the hotel system???

My biggest pet peeve with it is what I've witnessed at NCA. Used to be booking through housing you could get as good of, or better rates. That is no longer the case. Rates have gone up like crazy for that weekend in Feb/Mar (just look at same hotels rates the week before and after...) Additionally, I can no longer find rooms at military/government rates (even 6-12 months before) because they're all blocked for cheer housing. Then...the best/closest room blocks seem to be grandfathered to the preferred "big gyms" that return year after year. It's gotten incredibly frustrating! I love NCA... but I really hate the housing situation!

Connections a few years back told me that if I book through Priceline, etc, but for a Connections linked hotel, just call them up and they will put the information in their system as to where we are staying. That way you can still use miles, family perks, etc.

I was also told you only have to book a hotel if you are not staying with family (or at your own home). Therefore if you live in Atlanta...or your Aunt lives in Atlanta...you will get a pass ;). They just need to know this is the case.

Here you go:
Dear CHEERSPORT Customers,

We are writing to inform you that beginning this year at our 2014 National Championship in Atlanta, we are instituting a “Stay to Play” policy. Simply stated, this means everyone attending our National Championship will be required to book hotel rooms through our housing company, Connections Housing.

There are two primary reasons CHEERSPORT is adopting a “Stay to Play” policy. The first reason is that it is increasingly important to be able to prove to a host city how many hotel room nights our event generates. The city of Atlanta and the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) grant us special privileges based on the total number of hotel room nights that are sold. One benefit is that it allows us to contract space at the GWCC on a long term basis which is obviously critical to our long term success. Our designation as a “city-wide convention” also allows us to utilize many services the city of Atlanta offers, which in turn allows us to make our National event even more special for our customers.

The second reason for adopting this policy is that it allows us to ensure there are adequate hotel rooms available at competitive prices. The collective buying power of all our customers provides us leverage with the hotels, and therefore we are able to secure better prices for everyone. We are confident that our “Stay to Play” policy will serve our customers well.

Teams that entered the CHEERSPORT room raffle have been contacted by Connections Housing with the results of the raffle. For all other customers, housing will open up on August 1st. The Connections Housing CHEERSPORT telephone number is 1-855-63-CHEER and their email is CH

[email protected].

Please feel free to contact them with any questions you might have.

If anyone has already contracted their rooms directly with a hotel, please contact Connections Housing. They will work with you and the hotel to resolve the issue.

Thank you for your continued support of CHEERSPORT and your adherence to this new policy. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please give us a call at 888-Ready-Ok.

Sincerely,
CHEERSPORT Staff

This is BS. There is just too much in here that should be insulting to anyone who reads this 'explanation'. Just tell the truth and explain why it is being motivated by financial gain. So tired of these guys trying to pull the wool over the paying customers' eyes. Also their 'better prices for everyone' are no better than if a group was to book 10 rooms independently.

Our gym provides us with the competition schedule for the next season in May after tryouts so that families can plan ahead. We attend events in Columbus, Pittsburgh, Dekalb, Schaumburg, etc. Most families realize that these are "big" cities and competitions and most make reservations right away. We are not required to stay together as a team because the gym understands that not all financial situations are the same!

Our gym is (for now at least) attending Americheer in Columbus in November. Apparantely, this event is now a Stay and Play event, but everyone has their reservations made. As this is a two day event and my family of 5 cannot possibly all attend to watch my CP because adding the two day entry fee for five of us on top of all the other costs is just not possible. (And quite a disappointment to CP's older brothers! ;)) As usual, I will travel alone with my CP and share a room with another single mom and her CP. Because of points, discounts, etc, we have a suite in a hotel next door to the convention center, parking, breakfast and "dinner" provided for less than $120 a night! I will park my car Friday night and not have to move it again until I head home on Sunday. There is no way that this Stay and Play policy can beat this and I want to know who is going to pay the difference - because I'm certainly not! I'll send an e-mail to the visitors bureau in Columbus and let them know I'm coming and have spent money on an hotel room in their city!

Is there anything really comparable in size? I assume they're only considering athletes and staff, not fans, so the CWS wouldn't be close to the number of people of a decent cheer event.

Maybe not quite as many as a major/national comp, but March Madness perhaps?

Then why not work out something where teams register where they stay? Does that not accomplish the same thing?

They didn't say anything about the money which means its probably the money.

Stop.making.sense. You know that's not allowed. ;)

Oh I'm sure there's a financial incentive to it

A large company/corporation taking on a new, large endeavor just to make more money? I've never heard of such a thing!
