A large company/corporation taking on a new, large endeavor just to make more money? I've never heard of such a thing!

I have no problem with any business making money. That's why they exist. But my feeling is that this is a Varsity requirement imposed on Cheersport.

I was being sarcastic  As in, of course it's plausible that they would impose a requirement to make extra money.

Oh I know that. Just some people on here think that "doing it for the money" is wrong.

I've got different signatures depending on whether I post from my computer, iPhone or iPad. Always interesting to see which one pops up.

Maybe not quite as many as a major/national comp, but March Madness perhaps?

I don't think those bring more athletes and staff to a single city that a stay to play policy could be imposed on. Including fans I'm sure more people come than most cheer events, but I'm not aware of stay to play applying to fans in either case.

Guess what American Championships just tweeted:

I would not mind this if all the hotels are up for grabs instead of insiders having access to the best/closest rooms. Most of the decent, close hotels are blocked off even if you tried to book the day after the prior year's event concludes in these pay to play situations. Frankly if I am traveling over 3 hours by plane and then have to stay over 10 miles away from the venue that means I have to rent a car and pay parking at the hotel and the venue. It is just an expensive inconvenience - because you have to stay extra days when you have to travel a distance that requires plane travel. Some people may not mind doing this but I would rather have the choice instead of being limited.

Or at the very least, lots of free rooms for staff and VIP guests.

If they are responsible for booking that many rooms in Atlanta, they should be getting a very healthy kickback or dramatic reduction in price for the venue. I don't have an issue with that, by the way, just pointing out that that is likely their main motivation.
