Our team recently had tryouts and now there are plenty of girls who have never cheered in their life. One of them is a flyer for my stunt group. She is a little taller for her age and she is so so so lanky and skinny. I've backpotted her before and there's like nothing to grab onto. Basically I base her now and when she get ready to load the stunt it's very awkward. She'll put alot of weight in her hands like she's supposed to but she'll also put weight in her feet. She toes like crazy and she stands up to early. Our group finally got to the point where we could get her in a prep. But we can't even push up or go straight up into an extention. We can't figure out why. (Other than all the problems I just named.) It's very frustrating for our group even though we bend our legs to push her up like crazy. Any tips on how we can explain to her how to hold herself better when we push up? Or any tips on how us bases can muscle her up better?

My daughter just got a new flyer too-so far she has had 3 bloody noses and countless bruises. These are young girls (8-12) so I am not sure how we can help our new flyer...If you have any ideas, that would be great. I am really getting close to buying my daughter a face guard.

Has the coach worked with her? What has helped some girls "get" how to hold their weight is to tell then to pretend that there is a string coming out of the middle of the top of their head. Now pretend that the string is being pulled up. Your body pulls up but your feet don't leave the ground. It sounds odd, but helps some girls understand the concept. Practice it on the ground so she gets a feeling for it.
Recording the stunt and watching for the exact issues may also be helpful.
Definitely have the coaches watch and give advice. Good luck!

this is why tall girls should not fly its more dangerous and does not look good

I've never had a problem with tall flyers if they have the right technique. And having beautiful body positions with long legs makes beautiful lines.
It can be harder to learn the skills if a girl has never flewn before and is tall, but it is possible.

I guess someone should have told Maddie Gardner she's too tall to fly (sarcasm) tall flyers who know what they are doing have beautiful lines !!!! Don't make such a blanket statement :(

im just stating myy opinion i did not think Maddie looked good in the air and would have been much better as a back spot

You for sure can have your opinion, but this is a forum and everyone can state his/her opinion.

But saying tall flyers shouldn't fly, they don't look good and it's more dangerous (please correct me if this wasn't your statement), is a bit general and you shouldn't be surprised if people disagree and say it.

If Maddie would have been a good backspot - i don't know.
I guess her coaches put her in the spot that was best for the team, and it worked ;-)

Sometimes it just takes some time for people to get into the groove of things. Remind your flyer to really squeeze when she's in the air, not just her legs, but her butt and her abs. Also check and make sure your backspot is doing her job correctly. It's not all on the flier

You can tell by my name I don't love basing, but I am glad I have a flyer who knows what she's doing. Lots of sore muscles but no real injuries to speak of.

Like the post almost over me said - she needs to learn how to squeeze butt and legs. The whole body really! But if you barely can get up in a chest, should you really work on extensions? She might need some time to adjust and get comfortable first in a chest :)

Btw i'm almost always taller than my bases, never had the stunt felt or looked awkward. Tall flyers can fly too yoy know..

I've had taller and shorter flyers, ones who are more muscler and some who are really thin. There's no one type who can fly - working hard on tightness, skills and positions are all far more important. I personally love a tall flyer - makes skills look beautiful!

If the girl in the original is completely new it's likely just being uncomfortable in stunts. It is a dramatically different sensation from anything else. Stick with her and give her time and confidence, I say, because you might be lifting the future point.

I have this problem as a base too! Expect the person in my group is a base that can't base but this is one thing to remember, don't let the coach or flyer see you can't frustrated because it makes you look like a poor athlete! So if you are you and your other members in your group that feel this way must come up with a way to tell and help the flyer with tips and ways to practice at home. But if that doesn't work you can tell your coach to about the flyer and how to deal with it! But DO NOT, say she can't fly or is a bad flyer either to her and/or coach! It may make you sound like a bully and once again a poor athlete! Those are my tips so remember always work it out with your group and don't get frustrated! Good luck;)
