I'm still curious about the reasoning behind it. If one of the reasons was to prove how much business/money Cheersport brings to Atlanta, I have 3 issues with that.
1) Look at the sales from local businesses during those 3-4 days (not to mention as someone stated earlier how downtown Atlanta has stuff EVERYWHERE welcoming cheersport and even businesses put signs/posters in widows proving the impact!)
2) What about just spectators? Those people that come to Atlanta who aren't cheering and don't have to stay where Varsity commands? There are QUITE a few of them also. What about their economic impact, is it accounted for?
3) I think my biggest issue is that "they" (whomever they may be) seem to only be worried about the hotel industry. That's ONE aspect of the hundreds of businesses that profit from cheersport. Do they also look at say RESTAURANTS, the aquarium, theaters, the Coca-Cola museum, heck even the botanical gardens? No, I'm sure they're not. They're only concerned with the hotels and how they can control where and how much money is spent.

Rant over. I'm tired of this concept and seriously starting to be tired of cheerleading/Varsity. I just hope they don't destroy this sport.

If a large percentage would boycott, these bullying techniques would go away. Varsity is going to continue to suck every last dollar out of your pockets, but I feel with the Varsity kickback to the gym owner plan, they will still see 900 or so teams.

What do you by "mean kickback to gym owner plan??"

The Cliff Notes version is that gym owners who properly kneel at the throne of Varsity get monetary rewards (aka kickbacks). Go to enough Varsity brand competitions...get a nice rebate. Buy your uniforms through Varsity... another rebate. It's all here:

Varsity Family Plan
Interesting looks like my CP's gym meets all these requirements this season. Including the uniforms.

Don't forget the American Girl Store. I went there last year with my CP. Will NOT do that again! It was a madhouse full of cheerleaders lol

If they are responsible for booking that many rooms in Atlanta, they should be getting a very healthy kickback or dramatic reduction in price for the venue. I don't have an issue with that, by the way, just pointing out that that is likely their main motivation.

I heard from someone that CHEERSPORT was given the GWCC to use free because its the second largest weekend Atlanta does next to like the tuber ware convention. Could be made up, but this person is pretty credible.

I am not at all happy about this! I scored a few rooms close by because CP's gym couldn't get a block anywhere. I DO NOT want to be far away...it makes the Cheersport experience miserable!

I have heard the same thing. I have no idea if there is any truth to it.

Yes before Connections it was a different Housing company. They still spam my email on a regular basis lol! The reality is if you book just a few rooms it has been fairly easy to get a room nearby... Sometimes (wink) avoiding the mandatory book through XYZ requirement. Trying to get a whole team together has proven almost impossible for us, and we put in our requests a week after NCA 2013 for the upcoming year. It is what it is. Love the comp. hate the housing situation. Hopefully Atlanta doesn't turn into an ever increasing expensive stressful housing nightmare too

THIS!!! OMG, this!!!! I get spam from these stupid housing companies AS IF I am going to use them some other time. I cannot put them in my spam filter because I have to use them for reservations for cheer events. This is annoying beyond annoying. It irks me every time one comes and generates new ill will towards Varsity because I can't tell this guys to take a hike YET.

I really feel this is one more way to stick it to the parents in the money department. The fees for these events are entirely too high and then add this. I am pleased our gym has not required we stay together(unless it is a requirement and then we are told to use the company provided but again not required to stay as a group if we do not wish) but provided that option for those who like it.
I do not agree it provides us with the cheapest rates as Cheersport wrote rather it gives free rooms and reduces costs to the EP. That said if it is the rule I will follow it - did for NCA even though I had a cheaper rate through AAA. I did not wish to jeopardize my team if there was some way to check. In reality though enforcement of this would be pretty tough. Meaning can they dictate that you may not stay with family or prove that my CP did not stay in an approved room received via the housing while her nonparticpating family stayed in one at a cheaper rate in the same hotel... I think the rule is pretty silly when there is really no way to enforce and prove the rules were broken. I think from a public relation standpoint with gyms and parents it is a really unintelligent move. Certainly it is something they could request this year and state it will be mandated next if they must because gyms and individuals have already made reservations - but really I just think it is not good at all.
I will say depending on the venue and town there are ways to encourage gyms and parents to go through you. Case in point going to a comp and the EP basically put a hold on the entire hotel next to the venue. Small town, off season, they could do that... it also happened to be the hotel that had my rewards with so I had to go through the EP even though I was pulling a cheaper rate online it was unavailable now - closer to it could have been but my other choice was $30 more a night and not as close so I bit the bullet and I like to be ready ahead of time (way ahead).

Atlanta's hotel tax rate is 13%, this actually makes much more sense than people are willing to give credit. Atlanta wants to provide the convention center to events that attract as many out of town guests as possible. All cities would prefer out of town guests paying for their taxes vs their residents. This is much larger than Varsity, this is government and tax revenue. Yes, a city can identify weekends where tax revenue is off the charts but, Cheersport is not the only event going on in Atlanta. Atlanta and Dallas are prime places for conventions because, they have the ability to not only house people but, the airport can support thousands of people coming in and going out each day. If an event is growing, lets say in Indianapolis, and the airport can no longer support getting the attendees into and out of the city on the days the attendees want, then the EP of that event is going to have to find a new city for their event. Chicago is close, good airport traffic, however, hotels are expensive, hotel taxes are 16.4%, food, entertainment, parking, etc are much higher than, Atlanta and Dallas. Cheersport is going to have competition to keep its yearly spot on the GWCC calendar. Forbes has already come out and stated the government tracks your purchases on your credit cards, its not just to find the bad guys. Cheer competitions are cash only, government can track your hotel, food, entertainment, based on your credit card, however, they can't link it to a specific event. Stay to Play is Cheersports way of identifying, to the GWCC (state owned facility), how many hotel rooms and nights their event provides. The city is then able to identify, almost to the penny, based on the hotel rate negotiated how much tax revenue Cheersport brings to the table, they also know how many people are in a room and can then average how much food and entertainment tax to expect.

Are there kickbacks in event planning and owning a business? Yes. However, it really depends on how they are used as to whether it would be considered unethical business practices. If the EP and gym owners are getting free hotel rooms and they are using those rooms to house themselves, judges, coaches, etc. and that is off-setting coach and event fees then that isn't unethical. Varsity has big debt, we want them to make money and be successful if we want our kids to continue enjoying this sport.

Cheer comps are cash only because it saves on those pesky cc feeds and makes it easier to (cough) not claim all that taxable income! Just try asking for a receipt sometime...If they were on the up and up, that request wouldn't be met with a blank stare followed by a "your bracelet can serve as a receipt". Oh really, because nowhere on this paper bracelet does it show how much I paid. I'm sure the IRS will accept it!

As far as Varsity and their "big debt"... ;) ummmm no lol!

For some reason my "unethical" listed above is linking to a book listed on ebay, "The Ethical Executive", I'm not sure as to why, I have not read it.

Hmmmmm. Linked ads in posts... not actually added by the post's author. Hover over it and you get a text box that says "Link added by VigLink." Is this something new, @king ? If so... hmmm. It is not unless you hover over it that you get an indication that the person writing the post didn't actually intend for the link to be there. That kind of... sucks. I understand this is a "free" board that costs actual money to maintain... these kind of things seem rather... untoward. My overuse of ellipses is due to the fact that I respect that this site needs to bring in revenue but wish that there were other ways to do so.

It is Viglink and it is a necessity of the board. It now costs around 6K a year to keep this thing up and running.
