I would hope that if a non popular team had a great performance they would be scored correctly......we all know sometimes personal opinion can matter .....unfortunately.

DISCLAIMER: This may already be a thread. I'm not sure. Feel free to alert me if it is, Thank you.

Do you think that an unpopular team could win Worlds? Not unpopular as in untalented, but a team that not everyone has heard of. Every year you hear the same people win: Top Gun, Stingrays, CEA, Cali, CA, etc. Obviously they're beyond talented, but what if a small town team went all the way? Is it probable, do you think?

How are you defining popular?

In all sports where the outcome is decided by a humans opinion of who completed the criteria best after a short viewing (cheerleading, gymnastics, figure skating) its nearly impossible for an underdog to win. If you go back and watch videos of worlds 05 and 06 yo'd argue skill level from choreography. straight ups beat full ups because they had more doubles and were a better known team. So id have to say no i think hell will freeze over before a non popular team is allowed to win worlds due to all the angry fans who really know little about the scoring!

I think the best case scenario for a Not-so-popular team to win worlds (or at least globe) would be if a lot of the popular teams in that division really bombed. For example, Medium Senior, if both Orange and Aces had a BSB style routine, which is possible, then FAME or FCA would have a chance at the title.

I kind of agree, but I want to explain it a little differently.

At the end of the day, the "subjectivity" portion of the score sheet is how this manifests itself. I think that if you have two teams that are equally skilled, that larger/more famous gym almost 90% of time wins. (Smart event producers care more about Gym A winning [when two teams are about even in every category] because next year, they are registering another 10 teams as opposed to Gym B who will probably only bring 3).

This is not to say that certain unknown gyms or smaller teams don't ever win against more famous programs, there are more than a few outliers, especially in the lower levels. However, I think Worlds is such a public thing that it can't come without politics. So, I'd argue that there is a very slim chance for a team to win one of the senior divisions at Worlds (SAG, MAG, LAG, Smoed, Moed, LgCoed) without have a "famous" gym brand on their chest. People have crept into the top 10/5/ and even top 3 (South Elite, Basics, etc), but winning**? I'd have to see it to believe it.

And by winning, I mean winning even when the other team(s) hit. Not they fell so I slid up. Of course hitting your routine under pressure is part of how you become a World Champ, but you catch my drift.

The answer would depend on how you mean "popular" in your question. It seems that "famous", "from a large program", "traditionally successful", and "crowd favorite" are all thrown around as part of the answers. Those are not necessarily the same thing, although they are typically correlated. (NOTE: That doesn't necessarily mean that one causes the other.)
