Umm..... lol, you weren't on the Fierceboard feed, but I'm pretty sure he mentioned your name in one of his tweets. Now that I'm looking, it looks like his whole twitter was deleted, or I just can't find it.

pretty sure it's set to private now. just-a-mom's name was the one he mentioned (in his apology) using for comedic affect.

Dancing now shows if someone is sexually active or not ? That's different

Nah it doesn't indicate that someone is sexually active. It just makes them look like they might be. Perceptions. I learned a long time ago that, even though I was a wholesome innocent kid, if I behaved a certain way or danced a certain way or said a certain thing, that people would form unsavory opinions about me based on the behaviors they witnessed.

Hi everyone-

I'd really like to apologize for some of the tweets that were particularly rude. As much as I stressed the importance of being vigilant with security settings, I never got around to actually privatizing my own stuff, which was incredibly hypocritical of me. But, that's not even the bigger point--by mentioning some actual usernames, I came off as needlessly aggressive towards certain users, and in reality, the names that I mentioned weren't actually relevant in that I wasn't really having issues with those people. I guess I was trying to convey the self-admitted ridiculousness of the entire situation for people who weren't familiar with the situation, so I figured that using random "mom-related" usernames in conjunction with "twerking" would heighten the funny factor. I don't actually tweet regularly, and when I do, 99% of the people that I interact with are close friends, so when I'm on there, my general tone is considerably more cynical and sarcastic than it is just about everywhere else. Not trying to justify what I did, just trying to give you an idea of why I thought it was a good idea at the time.

My tweets were stupid and disrespectful; I understand that. To anyone I offended by using their usernames--I'm really sorry. I don't actually have anything against anyone here, I just thought the names were funny. I was wrong. I was stupid. I'm sorry.

Thank you for being mature and apologizing. Big props. Hope we've all learned a little during this exercise - now back to cringing at ugly uniforms, as it should be! LOL

Kumbaya!

if you think they don't look into your character and personal life prior, you're crazy. or maybe don't work anywhere that cares about their reputation. my facebook was always PG with pretty high security, but I was asked about things that they were alarmed with prior to being offered a full time job. work consumes a large part of your life and i am a direct reflection of them. i don't blame them 1 bit.

njallday is very correct. Companies very much do look at social media accounts and take it into account during the hiring process and they will even monitor it after you've been hired to make sure you are meeting company standards. I even recall reading about people who get paid big bucks to erase someones online footprint to help their employment opportunities.

In this day when many people are applying for one job and both are qualified, social media can and will make an impact on who gets a job! Kids do not realize that what is put on social media remains on social media forever!

Uhhhh not sure if you've ventured into the job market lately....

First off, the lack of reading comprehension you all have shown is astounding. If you actually took a second to read my words carefully, you would understand why I feel all of these replies are so asinine.

Allow me to elaborate....

My first point was that you will not get denied admittance into grad school for having a vine where you are twerking. Are you guys still with me? None of you even commented on this part of my post. We're talking about grad school, not getting a job in the big scary real world. Admittance into grad school is determined purely off of merit, grades, gpa etc.... But David, how do you know this? I have been admitted into grad school and successfully obtained my Master's Degree. Throughout my time in grad school I guess I spoke to, oh I don't know, a couple of professors (this is called sarcasm are you still with me?). I know what they look for and I know how they choose people. They want the department to look dignified on paper so they would never turned down a talented writer, with an outstanding gpa, who would write a great thesis, and maybe maybe even graduate with honors just because she danced and someone video taped it.

Now, onto the second part of my original post where most of you seem to have read with your eyes closed. I said, "What you do in your personal life IS and ALWAYS should be separate from you work life. They are two completely different things." They key word is should. I say should because unfortunately, I know it is not kept separate. This is called an opinion folks. This is how I feel about the situation. I think everyone has the right to as much privacy as they desire and as long as nothing they are doing effects their work, so be it. I never said this is fact. I am well aware companies sift through Facebook pages and Instagram accounts. It happens on the daily and there have been numerous articles and disputes on the subject. I hope you read this slower than my last post, and I hope this cleared some things up.

I'm still with you. Southern Methodist University will deny admittance to grad school based on social media blunders. They also ask profs and RA's for character references. But I know one girl denied grad school specifically for a picture posted from Greek Week. Reason given? Poor moral standards and lack of responsibility.

Really? Talk to any teacher to find out just how separate their personal and professional lives are. There is NO different in the eyes of the school district. Some districts have rules as strict as "teachers may not consume alcohol at any establishment within district boundaries" (so if you live in the town where you teach, you can't have a glass of wine with dinner). Teachers Facebook pages are looked at, in Pennsylvania a college senior, just days from graduation, had her teaching certificate revoked by the state and the university changed her diploma over a facebook photo of her with a cup in her hand and the caption "drunken pirate".

sorry, it was MYSpace, not Facebook.
That is a very specific situation. An extremely ridiculous move by the University in my opinion. And it wasn't really that cut and dry. The high school she was student teaching at pressured the University to discipline her or they would stop taking student teachers from the college. They claimed it was "promoting underage drinking," even though she was 25 when they picture was taken. Absurd. It was much more to do with the high school being unhappy with seeing the picture as opposed to how you painted the story. The University didn't just randomly find the picture and decide to not give her a degree. Furthermore, she only seems to have lost the lawsuit because of technicality. As stated by the judge, she University was not obligated to giver her the certificate if she hadn't completed all her student teaching hours.

Thank you for replying with a well thought out and researched reply. That said, when you bring a religion based University into the picture that changes the situation in my opinion. I mean, this is private college founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church! I still don't think it's right, but I see why she was denied admittance. They have their own moral standards that they live by so I guess it makes sense why they would hold their students to those same standards.

Sorry for the grammatical errors I was typing fast.

Okay, sorry I am not of the same educational background as you and obviously I cannot converse on your level so instead I will attempt to be courteous in my response.

I do not see where any of us disagreed with your statement of "What you do in your personal life IS and ALWAYS should be separate from your work life". Maybe that is how you wanted to read them. I am of the opinion they SHOULD be separate, with some possible exceptions, but unfortunately they are not and that separation is possibly becoming smaller and smaller. Imagine how integrated the two could be for your kids or grand kids?

Since I cannot speak for the others and why they replied like they did I won't, but as for myself I replied to basically confirm and possibly reinforce what NJAllday had said.

I certainly hope this reply is not as asinine as my previous obviously was and will apologize in advance for the grammatical errors I am guessing I made which might be driving you nuts at this point.

Grammatical errors on forums don't bother me. What bothers me is when I have ample responses to something I said, all with replies that don't even correctly respond to my original statement. I'm sorry If I came off strong towards you and you were only backing up what someone said, but look back at the posts.

They are ALL responding like I said, "Employers won't look at your facebook," which is not what I said at all. I merely said that they shouldn't. Not to mention the first two were a bit rude in their own right.
