Hey all, I just wanted some advice/input on something! Currently I'm a level 3/4 athlete (working to be solid level 4 within a few months) and I am going to cheer in college. I can coed fly, all girl fly and base. I'm looking at all girl div III teams and either coed or all girl intermediate teams. Oh I forgot to mention, these are NCA teams. Does anyone have suggestions of schools for me to look at? I'm looking at bigger colleges. Right now I have Towson, NC state (intermediate team), James Madison, and Udel (all girl team). Thank you, any help is much appreciated!

What tumbling skills are you throwing on hard floor? Standing Tuck? Toe touch tuck? ROBHS tuck or layout? What coed and AG stunting skills have you mastered? I always tell kids I'm helping to go to clinics and workshops of any and all schools you are interested in. Workout with the team when possible, to see what the team is throwing skill wise and also to see if you "fit" in with the team. Ive seen highly talented kids not make a team because the chemistry just wasn't there.
Finally and MOST importantly......don't base your college career solely on cheer. Education is 1st! If you are fortunate enough to have everything line up for you....by all means Go For It!

I would love for you to come check out our new program at Gannon! We are Division II and our program is currently all-girl.

That being said, I agree 100% with @collegecheermum - make sure to narrow your list of options by academic programs first. It's also important to make sure that both the school and the team are a good fit for you.

Feel free to send me a message if you'd like to get some more information. Hope to hear from you and best of luck with your search!

DIII by definition is not going to be a big school. If you pick a school based on whether or not you like it and it's good for you academically, you might be able to make the team no problem, especially if it's not a big name in cheer. Of course they might not even have a competition team...

Anyway, I joined my college team back when they still had a coed team. I'm tiny so got put on the team even though I had no tumbling at all and couldn't even double down. We competed D1 at NCA, so you never know.

@collegecheermum @Ashley I should've mentioned, all of the schools on my list I looked at academically before cheer. I've ruled out numerous schools because they didn't have my major. That being said, I'm majoring in sports management and I'm planning on working for Varsity in the future. So clearly cheer is going to be a huge part of my college experience! It's just harder for me because I don't have a full. To answer you @collegecheermum I throw a round off handspring tuck and standing tuck on hard floor. I've been to 2 clinics already and I've been emailing coaches :)

The schools you listed are not DIII. I can tell you that UDel and JMU are tough to make. JMU is co-ed only, and for both schools you'll need a standing tuck at minimum. Both teams require strong stunting skills.

Make a decision on a school based on academics and if the school itself is a good fit for you (could you live there for 4 years, no cheer?) Once you've decided on that, then look at cheer.

What state do you live in and are you welcome to looking at UCA schools as well?

I have a standing tuck! I should've mentioned that I did look at these schools academically before cheer.

I live in NJ but I'm looking out of state, the only school in state that has my major is Rutgers an I don't have an interest in going there

You plan in majoring in Sports Management right? I think Bowling Green State University has that. They also have an All Girl and Coed team. The coed team competes at UCA. The girls also do stunt.

I don't mean to jack your thread, but this fall i'm also majoring in Sports Management and plan to work for Varsity one day (hopefully!) I'm also in your same boat on not being level 5 and wanting to cheer in college. I still haven't got my standing tuck consistent after hurting my ankles and have other skills to work on, but I also have two more years because i'm attending community college and then transferring to a university and plan to cheer there! I just thought I would share this we could talk sometime about how much we have in common about our college plans :)

I agree with the posts that say to pick a school academically first but if you plan on getting your masters degree then the school that you choose for your undergraduate degree isn't as important. I am not sure if getting an advanced degree in sports medicine is a requirement or not. If that's the case, then choosing a school for their cheer team would be fine. Just a thought.

Seriously we need to stick together because Towson, JMU and UDel all girl are my top schools/cheer teams. And I want to do MassCom. I've visited Towson, JMU is a common school for seniors at my school andI live in the DMV so a visit isn't hard. U Del is on the schedule for a visit also.
