Does anyone else get upset when allstar cheerleaders call high school cheerleading not a sport? We have fulls and double fulls and kick double basket tosses and elite stunts too. Obviously it depends on your team, but i've done both high school and allstar, and they have been very equal in work for me.

It just offends me, and other HS cheerleaders, when people call it not a sport. We work just as hard as allstar and i just needed to vent.

The problem is that there are so many different experiences out there across the country so there is no way to make a blanket statement.

There is the HS cheer squad that is a stereotypical popularity contest and nothing else
There is the HS sideline cheer squad that only does chants
There is the HS sideline cheer squad that does chants, advanced stunts and tumbling on the sideline (this is not safe BTW)
There is the HS Cheer squad the only competes
There is the HS cheer squad that does all of the above

Don't get me start on how unsafe untrained coaches are. . .

It's great that you have a good program with constructive training. Please spread the word on how good it can be, but don't be surprised if others aren't part of or haven't seen programs that really couldn't begin to qualify as athletic or sport.

I wouldn't consider high school cheerleading a sport unless the team in question actually competes. There are some pretty laid back high school teams that definitely do not work as hard, but then again there are probably some all star gyms that are also very laid back. I do high school cheer as well as allstar and they're both hard work, just not in the same way. but hs honestly isn't consistent enough across the board to say that as a whole, it's a sport..

hahah ok valid point. But yes, the teams i am speaking of do competitively compete. I agree that maybe our HS team is more intense than other programs, so in that sense i guess so.

I'm really not trying to pick on you but it's a common argument. Now you can help others understand that not all forms of Cheerleading and not all teams are the same, but you'd be happy to see them get through one of your workouts so they can learn.

I think an awesome quote I've seen is:

"athletes lift weights, cheerleaders lift athletes"

The Shark version of the Fierce Board app

In some states it is considered a sport if the team competes. I consider myself luck to live in Illinois where it's been recognized as a sport for years. There are typically over 200 teams that compete at sectionals vying for those 10 spots per division to go to State. Then we have another organization that is designed just for competitive cheer squads. Competitive HS cheerleading is very popular in Illinois. We honestly cheer with more squads that are serious and compete than we cheer with squads who treat it like it's "cute" or "popular" to cheer.

I thought high schools aren't allowed to do kick doubles or double fulls anymore, unless that's just my atate

The Fiercest App of All... Fierce Board

I'm an Allstar cheerleader and I know that there's a difference between high school and all star. There's also another category under high school which is the competitive AND sideline then there is just only sideline.
I think sideline is not a sport.
I consider high school cheer as a sport when the teams compete at a competition because I've seen so many teams that have thrown fulls and amazing elite stunts just like an Allstar.
