I'm sure this has been discussed many times, but I don't get on the board often. If so, I apologize in advanced.

I want to ask a hypothetical question to parents. Your CP is at a good gym on a Worlds team. Next year (2014/2015) your child seriously wants to jump ship, move many hours away to cheer on a top team that has won worlds in past and continues to be in the running for the ring. If your CP somehow got on that team, would you let him/her go? Leave family, friends, and school their senior year to live with a host family? Everyone dreams of that ring, but how far would you go to let your CP chase it?

I guess it would depend on how much he/she wants it. Also, he/she would have to make sure they focus on their school work at the same time, too. He/she would have to be a very responsible, mature, determined person who has the self discipline to make it work and be away from home. Also, I'd have to really get to know the host family to be sure it is safe and a good fit for my child. If my child had an opportunity that meets all those criteria and it really means a lot to them, I wouldn't be opposed, although it would be difficult as a parent to miss all the milestones that happen during the Senior year...prom, graduation, etc. I guess when it comes down to it, it would depend on the kid and the situation. My kid is 10 right now, so anything like this would be a distance down the road for our family, but it is interesting to think about. If this is a potentially real thing for your family, best of luck to you and your CP!!!

I drive 3 hours each way to bring cp to practice. It is a huge sacrifice for my family to have her on a Premiere Worlds medaling team.
There is no way I would ever send her to a host family. As much as she wants that ring I don't think it will equate to the love nurturing and school that they can get in the young years. I know eventually they go off to college and leave the best but I would not give up those highschool years.
They can always move to a premiere i05 team for college and possibly win a college national or Worlds that way.

It all depends on how you and your CP feel about it.
IF they can handle it, and you are willing and circumstances all work out, why not right?

Not a chance, especially if my child was on a Worlds team to begin with. I would hope that this is truly a hypothetical situation and not what you're facing, especially since there are many posters from your gym here (aren't there?). I'd hate to read on a message board that one of my CP's teammates didn't think that they were good enough to be in the running for their dream.

No, my CP isn't going anywhere. She adores her team. She's chasin that ring with her 35 best friends. I have just noticed more and more kids are doing this. A kid at our gym did it. We all wish this kid well. But I'm hoping its not something we are going to see happen more and more. However, If it were a sport in the Olympics or would help get my kid a full ride into college, I might have to think about it long and hard.

I sent my son 1000 miles away to live with family to "chase the ring". Doubt I would have let him go to live with strangers, but it was something he is passionate about and I couldn't deny him that opportunity. It has turned out to be one of the best decisions for him. We miss him terribly and it hasn't been received well by the teammates he left behind, but he's better off because if it.

I don't think if I were a parent, that I could do it. I had a hard enough time moving to NYC for college, I can't imagine moving my SENIOR YEAR, after so many years with the same friends and people and family, across the country for a worlds ring. Missing out on so many things with friends and such.

Maybe, the difference with me, is that I didn't need to sacrifice my friends/family for my dream. NYC is so close to 'home' and all my friends are moving here anyway so it doesn't matter lol.

I think if the child shows they are truly serious about it, not just randomly saying "oh I wanna be on xyz Allstars" then it's a great opportunity. Those who get the rings are the most elite in this country and training with then would be an honour to any athlete I'm sure.
I think remind your CP (not in an attempt to scare them) that if they move away they have to be 100% committed. No turning back.

Off the back of this thread I have another slightly related point :

Do colleges/university's know and take into consideration what it is to be a World Champion Cheerleader?
Most sports give you great things to put on your résumé and we would all understand the Area, County,State and National titles for football and soccer and they will understand the time, effort and determination put in to win these titles - which looks good to a college.
Do they think the same about a World Champion cheerleader, or since the mass of the public know very little about our "world", does it go straight over their heads?

I think in the end, it's really going to come down to your skill.

No, I mean for getting into College, not the cheer team (sorry I should have made that clearer)! Over here, things such as being a high skilled athlete, winning championships etc is very impressive to the admissions committee as well as grades but I feel like being a World Champion in Cheerleading will be disregarded because people don't know what it is. Is it the same in the US?
