Mackenzie has been competing level 4 for the last two seasons also so her level 4 foundation is high. I do agree some individuals and little ones should not be trying the skills they are. But if they have solid four skills and have their fulls on the ground, like she has, they are capable of moving on. when she landed her double we were fortunate to have her cheer athletics idols at our gym that week. But have witnessed others from gyms, where you can say, why are they working on that?
Out of curiosity, in you opinion at what point does an athlete not require a spot when learning a new skill? I am just kind of hung up on that part.

In my gymnastics career and also my coaching career, each athlete is different n their steps to obtaining a new skill. Definitely following proper progression is a must! Mackenzie has been a kid that tumbling comes very easy to, flipping and twisting. In three years she has soared through the progression.

She's going to have a beautiful double when she gets around on that second rotation. You have to love the little ones who have no fear of trying anything on their own.

I don't want to step on any toes or anything, especially because I don't know anyone from State, but not spotting seems to be common with people from a gymnastics background. I tumbled at my cheer gym and a gymnastics gym and was never spotted by the gymnastics instructor. Instead, he used trampoline/tumble trak/rod floor/ spring floor with various mats on all of the surfaces to make it a more smooth transition from one surface to another. In cases where the athlete has plenty of natural ability, as it seems with the girl from State, going from a solid full to a solid double can be done with a few minor adjustments in the BHS and arm placement that often don't require a spot

I think once you pass the bhs and round off tuck it depends on the athletes ability when i started level 4 years ago i never used a spot when learning standing tucks layouts, whips i do better by listening and then trying on my own, same goes with twisting if someone steps in to spot i loose my mojo because im worried im gonna take them out. I rather do it alone so i can focus on what is told to me. some girls dont have natural ability to learn from oral instruction, I think each instructor and every athlete teach and or learn different ways. I also hate learning on a tumble track I rather work the floor or a (rod)? floor

With the whole spotting thing, I personally hate being spotted on anything. I'm thinking more about hitting the person spotting me than I am about the actual skill. I much prefer to keep doing it myself on different surfaces. I see girls who are begging to be double spotted on a BHS on the floor and I'm just like, "Um, no thanks. I'll keep throwing them on the rod floor."
Speaking of BHS I just got mine, and I've only been cheering for a year :)

Giving it up to my eldest CP. His high school is brand new (opens its doors officially next week) and he was just named as the school's first drum major EVER! I told him its all that male cheerleaderness. Being on Coed Elite has him overqualified since he can count to 8 instead of 4 ;)

You guys are all crazy:p I could never go to a gym where they don't spot, I'm too mental lol. I hate the tumblr track & rod floor and prefer to just start learning the skill on the floor (spring or hard, doesn't matter) with a spot.

We actually have these things that our tumbling coach sells, and they're like big long inflatable bouncy house type things. You get more airtime and less bounce on them than the tumble tracks I've used. I taught myself standing tucks on one, which probably wasn't the smartest thing to do... Haha but yeah, my tumbling coach will only spot people on skills who can do the drills correctly which is pretty smart in my opinion. I just don't like people touching me...

We had one of those at the gym where I used to tumble. I'm not a fan of those either lol. I think I like the way your coach thinks on the whole spotting people that can do the drills thing!

Congrats to him! My sister was drum major her junior and senior year, now that she graduated one of my best friends is. People always ask me why I'm "in" with the band kids since I'm not even in band... IT JUST HAPPENS OKAY.

That's how I am. I HATE tumble tracks... I always feel I tumble too quick or something for it because I always get a double bounce in there somewhere... If I slow down my tricks I hit the rebounds correctly. HATE that. So I just like to stick to the spring or hard floor, but normally without a spot. I then get frazzled I'm going to take the spot out in my trick, even though I learned to tumble at an acro/tumbling gym where 8 girls would tumble next to each other... you learned to go straight!
