This past season my 10 yr old did all star prep. There were 32 girls/boys on the team and it went from nov though April. They went to 3 comps ( 2 comps were 2 day)and competed as senior level 2. Prep is a great way for a family and athlete to gateway into this sport. I have an older daughter that also started with prep the season before and decided to move onto a full season the next year. I can tell you that more than half of the athletes tried out for a full season for 2013-2014 season.

Prep was created in response to requests to cut down the barriers to joining a traditional All Star team.

"The program that is created by the gym should include a shorter season, limited weekly practices, a lower financial commitment, limited travel, and a uniform that differs from their traditional all star program."

The documents says "should" when describing the teams because saying "must" or something more concrete is not enforceable. Nothing changed.

I was trying to tag you in a post but it won't work so I'm quoting you instead. I'm hoping you might know the answers to some questions I have... Are EP's required to offer ALL of the allstar prep divisions listed (http://usasfrules.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/USASF-All-Star-Prep_4_5_13.pdf)? Are the age guidelines any different (floor on Senior age)? I know kids can't cross between allstar and prep, but can they cross between prep teams?

I was on a half year allstar prep team last year. I like it a lot! It was a great intro to allstars. The main reason I was on this team and not a regular allstar team was because of the expenses. I thought it was an ok program. There were also some flaws with it though. Our team was treated as the red haired step child because we weren't as good as the others teams in my gym. I'll just tell u the cons. Half the team wasn't dedicated and didn't care what place we got. There weren't a lot of teams in our division. There were only eight girls on my team. A team we competed against was clearly a full year regular allstar level 2 team while we were a junior level 1 team. Now I am on a junior level one allstar team and I am so happy I am finally getting to do it. I saved over $800 to be on the team. I think the prep teams are a great source of new allstar regular cheerleaders because my whole team switched to allstar!

My CP started allstars on a prep team 2 years ago and I think it was a great intro for us. We would have been overwhelmed and she would have been severely under skilled starting on a full year team. She was able to get one experience and skills first. I think that done properly it is a great program and a good way to get kids interested in allstar without families having to jump into a year long commitment.

I did the allstar prep in reverse lol. My first year of allstar was my senior year of high school and I did a full season team. I moved away from home for college and the expenses of a full season team were just out of the question. I was able to convince my parents to let me be on an AS prep team since I had JUST enough to pay for it with my left over scholarship money. I really enjoyed it. One con was there was no other girls around my age. The second oldest girl was like 15 while I was 19. Probably the only other con is you don't have as much time with your team so you don't get that same bond like you do with a full season team. I guess it was my way of postponing the end of my cheer career.
