My league is considering adding flag football next spring. As cheer director, I likely have to add cheerleading for it. Any ideas, comments or suggestions on coordinating flag cheerleading? Any difference from cheering for tackle football? Any suggestions on how not to get burned-out, running a year-round program?

Well, there are a few physical differences between a flag game and tackle (at least when played in AYF- your league might be a little different).

The most important factor is that the game is shorter, which is good if you have Flag Cheerleaders. It is also played in two halves instead of four quarters-and the time in the first can go quickly, especially if you do a hello cheer for the opposing team.;) The other important thing is that no extra points are scored after a touchdown, so you don't need to prepare for those sideline cheers.

The actual cheering is the same. The problem we had were the girls that went from rec in the fall straight into mid-season at the cheer gyms. When fall football /cheer end around November/ December, that's when mid season begins. For a lot of people this how they are able to do both rec and allstar. You will get a lot of new cheerleaders into rec though the spring season though. Good Luck.

Thanks for the information. Good point about the overlap if we have all-star and flag. Much prefer all-star, but football director has expressed an interest in having flag added.

Just something to think about, all AYF and non Pop Warner leagues should see a marked increase in flag enrollment next year, because Pop Warner is no longer having a Flag program. By default, a new flag cheer program should thrive :)

I just recently started coaching a flag football cheer team, (ages 5-7) and am in need of cheers for them. I have no idea where to start! I have a couple offense and defense and 2 general cheers. Thank you to anyone that can help!

For that age, keep it simple, easy to remember and keep the motions clean. Examples:

Big G, Little O, Go, Go

We, we want a touchdown

First and ten, move that ball again

H-O-L-D Hold that line

Don't try to teach them too many cheers - you will be fine doing the cheers multiple times during the games. Include fun ones that you may find annoying but the kids love (example - Who rocks the house, the (mascot)s rock the house and when the (mascot)s rock the house, they rock it all the way down - I *abhor* this cheer but meh, the kids loooooooove it. So it goes. Sometimes, in fact often, my ideas of perfection must make way for what is, in reality, better - the pursuit of fun and a love for this sport.)

It's been years since cp cheered for town, and I think she only did it in kindergarten, but this one still sticks in my head:

Cookies
Cookies
Cookies and cream
What's the matter with the other team?
Nothing
Nothing
Nothing at all
Except they can't play
Football (stomp with foot on each syllable of football)

Thank you so much! And yes for me it's all about the love for the sport, and I want them to have fun and love it to.

Two of those are actually my high schools cheers. Also another one is similar.

they love the Cookie Monster cheer...
the Cookie Monster says that the (team name)s are
the great big cookies at the top of the jar
the Cookie Monster says that the (opposing team)s are
the itty bitty crumbs at the bottom of the jar!

also: A w e, s o m e, awesome, awesome, awesome are we!

s p, (stomp stomp), I r, (stomp stomp), I t, (stomp stomp) we got the spirit, (stomp stomp) so let's hear it!

ashes to ashes, and dust to dust, you've for to be a (team name here) to jam with us (clap clap) to jam with us

also the little ones love hey cheerleaders of there are other cheerleaders... hey cheerleaders (hey what) hey cheerleaders (hey what) let me see you get down (no way) let me see you get down (okay) the next part there are a ton of variations on. BUT if there aren't other cheerleaders to yell across the field to, they can still do the cheer if the coach does the "asking" parts!

I n d i a n s, Indians are the very best! (obviously switch out for your team name!)

that's all I can think of right this second, but I once compiled a list of all the cheers for my Pop Warner organization and I know a ton more if you still need help!

Go, go (mascots), everybody yell...go (mascots)!

We want you up! Up on your feet! The (mascots)...just can't be beat! XX

*song*
There was a little froggy sittin on a log
Cheering for the other team, he had no sense at all
Fell into the water, bumped his little head
And when he came back up again, this is what he said
He said: go, go go, go you mighty (mascots)
Fight, fight fight, fight you mighty (mascots)
Win, win win, win you mighty (mascots)
Go fight win! And do it all again!

6 more xx 6 more xx come on (mascots) let's up that score!

We wanna touchdown (mascots) yes we do!

And slide, and slide, and do the butterfly
And dip, and dip
And shake my little hips
We want you, and you, to cheer with us too!
(From Hannah Montana hahahaha)

You got the ball, we want the ball, hey! Defense, defense!

Knock em down, roll em around, come on defense work!

Reeeeed hot, our team is reeeeed hot, our team is r-e-d, h-o-t, reeeeed hot!

Hit that tackle, push that guard, move that ball another yard!

F-i-r-e, fire up fire up fire up! xxx
