Few schools in my county have always worn their uniforms on game days until today when the county banned them for not following dress code. My old school only wore them last year for home games (with black under armor sleeves) and was only allowed for 4 games before other students complained it wasn't fair our skirts were not mid thigh.

I know there is a thread somewhere about what different schools wear but I couldn't find it and thought this would be necessary as its own thread.

Here is an article focussing on one of the schools. Pinellas schools say cheerleading uniforms are dress code violations | Tampa Bay Times

Little's school was like this, so they ended up having to wear their warm-up pants under their skirts on game days, until they did away with them altogether.
I thought it was another knee-jerk reaction by administration until I learned how many times Little whirled around and smacked boys who felt that a cheer skirt means touchy-time. She handled herself, but from that point on, I was just fine with the rule.

Our girls have to wear leggings or warmups under their skirts. NBD
Exactly, I don't think it's a big deal if they have leggings on and something to cover their shoulders. Now, this being Florida and all our schools are 90% outdoors in the area, some coaches have the girls just wear their jackets, which results in girls taking off their jackets when they feel like it. I don't know how the main school in the article covered up, but I do know another school down the street wore turtlenecks and I never saw their skirts being 'that' short. But then again, it's high school and it only takes one teacher, student or parent to complain -_-

This is just something I don't understand. I understand that most uniforms don't follow the dress code, but why ban them at school but then also allow them the same day, on school grounds, while cheering at a game? I know that it's not necessary to wear uniforms to school (like you don't see volleyball players walking around in their spandex shorts,) but then they just wear them later at practice and during games, school sanctioned events, where they're going to be seen by friends, family, faculty, and fellow classmates. What's the point of hiding it during school? The only reasoning I can think of would be that the games focus on the athletes themselves, while being in school is focused on learning. But I never really saw wearing uniforms to school as a distraction...

The team I coach is not allowed to wear theirs to school either. Usually, they wear their warmup pants and a team shirt. I was thinking of changing it this year and require them to dress up at school. Thought it would make for a nice change.

I completely agree with @Ems. If its not okay at school it shouldn't be okay at games. Everyone will see the length of the skirts at games so why can't they at school? Now, if the cheerleaders said they were uncomfortable with it that would be one thing. But #1, they don't control the length, and #2, they're representing the school wearing a uniform purchased by the school.... Why are we hiding them? I also don't understand dress codes preventing "distractions" like if someone can't focus on school because I'm wearing my uniform, why am I being punished? Then again we have no dress code so maybe that's why I don't get it.

Really? So you think the volleyball team should be able to wear their spandex shorts to school? The swim team should be able to go to school in a speedo? What about gymnastics?

Uniforms are appropriate in certain contexts. Just because they're appropriate at games doesn't mean they're appropriate during the day for school. (It doesn't mean they're not either, but just because the school bought it doesn't mean it's appropriate)

I have always thought the reason for wearing a cheer uniform to school was to promote school spirit and to remind the student body that there was a game that day (in case any of the students are living under a rock). Both of my CPs' schools have dress codes. The high school lets the cheerleaders where their uniforms to school without having to wear leggings or warm ups (they are a lot more appropriate than some of the "civilian" clothes that some of the students wear). The middle school requires them to wear their warmup pants. I don't understand the logic that it's okay to wear a cheer uniform to a game but not at school. At school they aren't doing back flips or stunts where their skirt comes up and their bloomers show but they do at the games. And there are a lot more people watching them at the games then there are in the classroom.

I have never been in the camp where it is okay to wear uniforms to school. I do believe that uniforms are appropriate for practicing and cheering at games. If the intent is to promote school spirit, there are many other options such as practice shirts and warmups of fanwear (girly) football jerseys that the girls can wear during school which promotes just as much spirit. I can also be made available to the student population so all the kids that have them can wear them on game day, which will promote a lot more "school spirit" than just the cheerleaders. Another option, which is what our girls do, is to wear one of the football players jersey. other girls (girlfriends, friends) also do the same thing and it works well.......So there are alternatives to the actual cheer uniforms. I do not understand why people are upset about not wearing uniforms......JMO

At my school, only the softball and baseball players can wear their uniform to school, because they leave early for games. Everyone else either wears our school colors, the top of their jersey and khakis, or dresses up. The only time our team wears our uni is the day of the homecoming pep rally, and we have to wear sweatpants and our shell and under armour. That spirit week is the only time anyone in school can wear sweatpants too, so we choose that Friday because of the assembly.

At our high school the cheerleaders will also wear spirit shirts and jerseys for the pep rallies...with shorts or skirts. They have to wear shorts/skirts because they jump, tumble, stunt, cheer and dance just like an all-star routine at their pep rallies. What else are they suppose to wear that is safe and appropriate?

We always had time to warm up and change for pep rallies - usually we wore warmups and a t-shirt I think. But again, that comes down to context.

Our cheer warm ups are form-fitting (think Victoria Secret yoga pants). In my opinion, our normal length pleated skirts are more appropriate looking then our warm ups. But that may just be our school. I have no idea what other schools warm ups look like; I can't remember ever noticing what other schools wear. Now I am going to make sure I notice ....when it's not 150 degrees outside. ;)

Ha, I'm from Massachusetts. We only wore our uniforms to maybe 3 football games before it's too cold for that!
