All-Star Deferred Summit Bids From 2013

We got our bid to Worlds the first weekend of April and knew that if we got it we would be buying the plane ticket and make arrangements to go Florida in a few weeks. I don't like deferring bids but the way the Summit is set up you can bring a whole new team to the summit that you qualified with and add more team members anyway! unlike Worlds where you have to qualify with the max to bring the max. That is a silly rule.

I believe it was exactly 4 weeks

That's not bad, that's about all the time we had. PLUS we lost someone to another gym since Summit was technically after the regular season ended...and we had 5 practices to get ready. Didn't hurt our team.

But deferring? I think that's crazy. Take our small Y3 team who went - this season it is only 1/3 what is was when we got the bid. One went to Top Gun, one (us) moved out of state, several aged out to J3 and several leveled up to J4. So - You would stick what kids back on that team? The still-youth aged kids from last year who got the bid but are on J4 now? And boot off the newbie Youth 2 kids who just made Y3? Or use the new Y3 team made up of only 1/3 of the team who got the bid in the first place? I can't see it...I realize it could be done but to me that's crazy. At least with Champions League it's more of an entire team thing- like those chosen teams are always good - it's not like they had to get a bid at a certain comp - the EP's knew which teams they wanted beforehand, regardless....

I don't think she meant how long to get the team ready, I think this was more of a financially get ready. Coming from Seattle-ish to Florida is a bit more difficult financially than coming from Florida to Florida.

That being said, I agree with everyone that this seems strange and unfair. When my cp was on a worlds team we were told at tryouts that they would try to get a bid until they got one or there weren't anymore to try for. That meant if they got one 4 weeks before worlds we'd better be prepared to fork over the money. So we knew 10 months in advance that there was a possibility of spending that money.

Same thing with US Finals for the younger ones. They've always told us from day one, on the comp schedule: "If we get a bid, we'll be taking this trip. Budget accordingly."

I'm not sure why these teams couldn't have decided months in advance that they would be going for the bid and to plan on going to the Summit. If you get the bid, great - keep on keeping on. If you don't, then you've got some extra money set aside.

well it clearly wasn't publicized, so now i'm curious. were any paid bids deferred?

I'm wondering that as well..I know teams/gyms that turned down bids bc they were waiting to see what it would be like and how it would play out but that is not really fair if that counts as deferring ....I would think they would have to have paid a fee to hold the spot - most teams had to pay a deposit within a few days to hold their spot- the ones who WERE attending so I wonder if anyone else had to - to defer.

We also received a full paid bid to US Finals - both our Y2 and Y3 (ironically both my cp's teams) but then when Y3 received the Summit bid the US finals was dropped....luckily Y3 was the "money winner" in the US championships where we got the bid and that went towards our coaches fees and hotels etc. so I do realize it is quite the expense last minute BUT, like everyone said - you realize its out there, you should plan for it - it's not like it appeared in April, gyms had all season to know if they had bid comps on their schedules....and we lived close. If you were flying distance I would expect you would have had to discuss within your gym at the start of the season, but I know it was such a new thing, many did not....this season I see many already have :)

I do know that the team that deferred their Summit bid (that they received at Sea to Sky on April 7th, 2013) took 2 other Sr teams to the Summit, so why they decided to defer the bid for their 3rd team is a mystery. And I agree with @GlitterPlz :cookie:that they have tried to use this "summit bid" as a recruiting tool in the area. Their tryout flyer states: Jr Level 2 -Summit bid for 2014:confused:
I don't agree with the concept of deferring a bid since the team that won the bid won't even be close to the team that will end up at the event (Summit, Worlds, etc) and this bid is than used as a "carrot" to get athletes on the team who were not on the bid winning team.
Also, if I'm not mistaken another International team (not going to mention the team name) also received a partial paid IASF Worlds bid at this same competition and deferred it until Worlds 2014. I've checked the Sea to Sky website and the Worlds and Summit bid winners are no longer listed. And I swear I read (somewhere and can't find it now) that this same competition will be allowing you to defer both Worlds and Summit bids again this coming year. :cow:

At first, I was wondering if it might be because the summit was new last year - so may be this was a one year thing. This year gyms in our area seemed more deligent about putting the summit as a possibility on their schedules.

I don't agree with the concept of defering bids. What if you earned the bid the previous year and then aged out of that level...all around does not seem fair to the team that won the bid or to the next year's competition.

If it happened last year fine - deal with it - but should not be an on going approach.

I have never heard of Worlds deferring bids and cannot see that happening. We got our bid that same weekend and never was offered deferring.

The only times I've heard of 'deferring' worlds bids is with International teams, particularly Pacific/European teams (where the cost to get over here is INCREDIBLY difficult to fork over). Their comp schedules/seasons don't always quite match up to ours, though, so it makes even more sense that they would defer bids sometimes..

As for Americans...umm, what?

I don't like this rule, however, I don't see any benefits to it either. Kids are going to age out and kids/parents are going to want their child to move on if they have the skills at tryouts. Then the normal issues of economics, injury, burnout, moving, new team chemistry, etc. Can they now create a team of kids that has on level or above skills? Yes, but, nothing is stopping any other gym from doing the same exact thing this year.

For some reason I feel like I read somewhere that they wouldn't be offering deferred summit bids anymore at sea to sky for next year but maybe I'm mistaken.

Exactly - what are the benefits? The Summit will have more than enough teams there this year...it's not like they need the extra teams. No benefit at all for Varsity to offer this....IMO
