I have just started flying this year for my high school team. I have a fairly good elevator but not extension. Whenever I load in people say I push out the bases and I have no idea how not to do that. Please help!!

They mean that you aren't squeezing your legs, and you're spreading them apart which pushes the bases out. Think about squeezing your inner thighs together and squeezing your ankles together as you go up. Also ask if your back can try to pull your ankles together. Lots of backs focus on pulling up but they can also do a really effective job of pulling legs together too when needed. But make sure you try to fix it before telling the back that (you don't want them to feel like you're blaming them)

Thanks, that helps a lot!

Always remember to look up! That's the main thing that causes me to fall :( never look at the ground because that's straight where you'll be headed :L

In my experience having the backspot squeeze the ankles for the flyer can sometimes lead to future "bad flyer habits". At a school I used to coach at I had all of my flyers, beginners and experienced to do load in drills repetitively in sets of 5 where I would make them hold a sheet of paper between their feet while jumping into a sponge without letting the paper fall. If one persons sheet fell we started from one again. They also held the sheet between their knees as well.

I also did the same drill with large rubber bands I purchased from Walmart and placed them around the flyers shins and thighs. During both drills Once they are in a sponge I would have the bases let go of the flyers feet and make the flyer dangle there with their weight in their arms for 20 secs. This ensures that they aren't weight bearing in their legs which can force the bases out and that they aren't dropping their bottoms in the initial load in.

Once those two drills are mastered I allowed the groups to load up to preps and extensions with the bands still on. This allows the flyers to become aware of keeping their legs no more than shoulder width apart as the bands would force their legs closer if they went beyond shoulder width.

You can do the first two drills at home as well with two sturdy chairs, or two siblings / friends. Also core exercises will help you a lot as well. Hope that helps ya some! :)

If you remember to squeeze your butt, pull up as much as you can, remember not to look down, and be confident you can do it. Flying is hard but no matter what your back spot and flyer will catch you!

Just don't try & be gentle ! I've realized when I do that it makes it harder on them & I tend to be more wobbly & unstable & I push them out too . The harder u push the quicker ull go up & the lighter ull be . :)
