I had an argument with my French teacher about whether or not cheer exists in France. I somewhat convinced her, but she said I'd be able to do a presentation about it for extra credit. I found various gym websites but I'm having trouble finding info about what various skills are called. Is there anyone on the boards that can help?

Cheer Excess in Paris has a bid to 2014 worlds. My daughter and two of her coaches went over last year at thanksgiving to work with them (hence the profile pic). They're awesome people I can't wait to meet myself this April!

I'm french, so I can try to help about translation issues (emphasis on try, though... because I'm not personally involved in cheer).

To be honest, not many french people know that cheerleading isn't only some weird thing that goes on in american high schools during football games. I only found out there were competitive cheer gyms in France quite recently (there still aren't many, but you gotta start somewhere, and they seem to be progressing fast !)

Here are the youtube channels of two gyms who did well at the last national champsionships :

Ah thank you! I'd like to show at least a couple seconds of video, as my teacher isn't American (she's originally from Morocco) and doesn't quite understand how cheerleaders compete.

Not sure if I'm being helpful, but our Belgian gym has a French team as well (there's a Flemish and a French part in Belgium) and they use just the English names for skills. The coaches are Flemish though, so not sure if that counts for you ;)

I saw that gym when I went to Paris last year, so I too can confirm

What you can mention in your presentation as well is that cheerleading is spread worldwide. Not just North-America, but Latin-America, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe even Africa! I met a girl at worlds a few years ago who was coaching a team in Kenia and the team from South-Africa competed several times as well.

Then maybe go deeper into the countries that speak French or have a French speaking part like Canada, Belgium and Switserland.

good luck!
