I think the best way to gain a team's respect it to demand it. When they see a cheer team that is working their butt off every day, they will begin to take notice. When they see the school spirit that your team brings to every event, they will pay attention. When they see your team being positive role models and leaders in the school and the community, they will keep watching. And when you hit a perfect routine at half time or a pep rally, they will respect you. Know this, though- as long as you respect yourselves, no one else's opinion matters. Alot of times, the football team follows the lead of their coach or their most well liked players. When their coach begins to praise your team, or the quarterback starts talking about how awesome you guys are, the team will follow suit. Cheer has always been a sport that has to fight to earn respect-- we have been looked down upon since the beginning of time. It's our job to let that energy feed our fire-- let it drive us to be the best and keep us pushing harder when we think we have nothing left to give. Work hard, and the football players will respect you. And, even if they don't.... Who cares?!? You are CHEERLEADERS! You're fierce! You don't need anyone else's approval or validation... You are AMAZING all on your own! :)

Always remember, respect is earned, not given. So honestly ask yourselves, does my team deserve respect? Are we hard working, are we practicing and performing to our fullest potential, are we leaders not only on the sidelines but also in the classroom and other clubs, are we resectful, kind and polite? If the answer to all those questions is an honest yes, then just keep doing what you do and sooner or later people will take notice of the outstanding student athletes you are

First, make sure you have the kind of stunts in your routines that are associated with demanding, competitive cheerleading routines at the upper high school and all star level, and then, once your team is at that level, invite them to a typical practice and see if they can keep up. If your team is a competitive high school team at the upper state levels, odds are at least some of your team won't be able to make it all the way through. Some one even make it through warm ups.
