Earlier this comp season we got a safety warning for our hair being longer than our shoulders. My coach looked into it, contacted some people and she said next year there will be a rule about having your hair above your shoulders. That means doing buns, tight curls or some weird other hair-do. Do you guys have to do this next year as well? And if you do how do you feel about it?

i believe this rule is only for teams with their hair down or half up half down. In order for it to be half up or all down it has to be shoulder length or shorter. I doubt it would apply to pony tails. Not 100% on this tho.
The lady my coach emailed said it was for any hair-do that has hair below shoulders. :(

Hm, I haven't hear of this rule yet.... but I've noticed a lot of teams around here (New England... specifically MA) have lately been doing high buns and bows. They usually do just plain bun, french braid up the back & bun or braid on the side and bun. I think it looks cute and makes the bow stay up nice and high for the cheerleaders who aren't pros at doing their hair/making bows stay up!

We have that rule... hair can't touch shoulders or face. We do buns but in the past we've done tight curls. I don't like it because I look bad if you can't see my hair (which is why I wear my hair down to school and never up) and a bun is even worse than a ponytail for me, but at the same time it's nice in that your hair isn't hitting you, getting stuck in your lip gloss, etc. But I don't think that your hair getting in your face is really much of a safety issue, just annoying, so I don't really get the rule and I think it's kind of silly.

This rule applied to our rec team, and a little girl has hair down to her butt and it was in a pony tail but we weren't positive on the rule so we pinned most if it up and got it off her shoulders. Random, but made me think of that haha!

I know here (IL) that's been a rule for a while. Back when I was in high school I remember on e having to cut the girls' hair pieces so that they didn't hang below the nape of the neck. They wore that whole Pony tail thing you see into a bun.

It's been the rule here in WA for a while.
But I think it only applies if you're stunting (which most of us do, haha.) Like, if the football game is too rainy to throw a stunt or if we're just dancing for an assembly, we can do half-up styles with long hair.

Here in NY, a lot of the girls in HS wear their hair in buns or ponytails with tight curls. I know that at states this year a team that usually wears a straight pony had to go back and put their hair up in buns. So I don't know which organizations support the above the shoulder rule, because there is more than one organization governing school cheer here and many schools compete within 2 or 3 systems.
