Thinking ahead to the holidays, and all my two cheerleaders are asking for is a wedge ("cheese") mat to use at home.

Have any of you shopped online for tumble mats for home use? Would love any recommendations for good sites to look at, as well as suggestions on mat size. My girls are 8 and 10, and will be using the mat to work on level 3 skills - if that factors into recommendations for mat length, etc!

Thanks all... :)

I don't know where you get a good deal on one, but I got a good deal on one. I kept searching Craigslist and I found one that a HS had bought and it is basically in new condition. I don't know what Level 3 skills you could do on it in your house. It is huge. It doesn't look that big in the gym, it is gigantic in my house. It's too nice to put in the garage. It's too big to keep stored comfortably anywhere in the house. (I bet it's close to the size of a full size mattress when folded into one piece and twice as thick) It is a huge hit with other CPs when they come over except for the fact DH has a heart attack when he sees anyone on it because he doesn't want anyone to hurt themselves at our house. Good luck, but I would take a tape measure and actually mark out how big it is. It's folded up against a wall in my bedroom at the moment and does not match the decor.

Thanks for the info.... and LOL about it not matching the decor! :) They're wanting to work on their back tucks on it, I know that - and I think our dog will enjoy sleeping on it. Ha...

the decor.

Well that cut and paste went awry! I was just going to say... The decorating sacrifices we make as cheer parents. My basement is dominated with blue mats and a big wedge.

Most of the wedges you see online for home use are not huge...barely the space you would need for tucks. Another thing to note is that they tend to be pretty stiff at first as well. I know I would not let CP try ST on the wedge until it was somewhat solid at the gym. Gym quality ones are probably the best way to go but tend to be really expensive.

Ask your cheer gym if you can order one through them. I bought my DD her mat at her old cheer/gymnastics gym for a good price. There are a couple places online that you can google search but I don't have experience with ordering mats online.

No fear of cp not having a spot while learning new skills? I know my cp did stuff on a trampoline but at least there has more hang time to complete slow revolutions.

They're both pretty solid on the standing tuck in the gym at this point - so the mat wouldn't be for learning a new skill, per se, more for working on the existing skill. They also want it for general stretching, and I am sure there will probably be plenty of body surfing down it since they are goofy little kids... ha!! :)

I know you said your girls wanted a wedge, but you also might look at a panel mat. It was super helpful for me to have at home when learning a standing tuck and standing BHS tuck. For ST you can easily fold it up or down to give a little extra boost in height and adjust it as they get better with the skill (ie fold the panels so 3 are folded up with one panel out for landing, then eventually unfold it to be just flat, then have them start on 1 panel and land up on top of the folded part. Hopefully that makes some sense haha). It is also great for overstretches and jumps. It also folds up easily for storage. I always kept mine under my bed- but again, measure it out to make sure you have enough open space! I think mine was 4 ft by 8 ft by 2 inches Tumbl Trak Royal Blue Tumbling Panel Mat with 2-Feet Folding Panels, 4-Feet Width x 8-Feet Length x 2-Inch Height:Amazon:Sports & Outdoors

We do have a panel mat and it sees a lot of action.... will probably look into replacing it at the same time because it is getting pretty beat up! That's a great idea about folding it up for the ST!

Only thing we ever bought was a stretch chair. It generally stays unused stored up under the pool table although the original plan was that it be the gaming chair....video games were fine as long as you were in the chair stretching.

What a lovely plan that was.

As for tumbling, I wouldn't allow that in the house without a coach (not that they ever asked beyond me helping my 6 y/o with back walkovers way back in the day).

Hmm...are you the lady who wanted to create a gymnastics room in her house for her daughter? She had a dance room but wanted a separate Cheerleading room for tumbling?
