For those of you who live in Arizona, is it true that you are not allowed to be on both Allstar and high school cheer? I've heard this before but was never sure.

Yep it's true...I think it was the AIA that passed it but yes you can't compete all star and high school at the same time.

What's the basis for this rule?

Michigan basically had the same rule you cannot be on 2 competitive sports at the same time per MHSAA. So, you cannot be on your HS competitive squad and an All Star team. They can do side line in HS as that is considered a "club". Some of our High School coaches won't even allow the All Stars do that

I gotcha. What if it's two different sports? Is that allowed?

Illinois has it too. Not 100% sure about 2 different sports - I think they have to be the same sport. So like you could do school cheer and club volleyball, but not school cheer and allstar cheer. It's annoying and I hate it. That's why there are so many half and quarter season teams up here - to get all the high school cheerleaders after states.

Eta cp19 did sideline so she was safe. Her school didn't have a competition team.

In Michigan I think it's any competitive sport. However, I am not positive. I don't see this changing anytime soon. We also had a HS squad lose a competition because they had a boy on the squad :( sad and backward.

Some state associations see it as a way to limit over training by kids. There are many studies that say no sport should be played year round and especially in developing kids.

I went to the AIA State qualifier today (in Arizona) and it became very obvious to me the results of this rule is HS teams that have suffered and in all honesty scared the living crap out of me. This my first HS competition to attend and let me tell you I covered my eyes more then once. IMHO AIA's rule is ridiculous, it states that you cant do both all stars and HS but you can do HS cheer and competitive dance, gymnastics, or any other sport. So what is the reason for it? Who knows, it kinda feels like a grudge rule by someone who doesn't like All Star Cheer.

Sucks for programs like AZ power and dse losing kids to school cheer... I'd rather stick with allstar and do envy but some want the school experience

The thing is that I don't think they loose many to HS cheer. Some try it but come back to all stars after a year. My CP is thinking about doing HS next year but I'm not to sure about it, how do you go from a team like Cali Coed to HS (and here in Arizona teams are like a level 3 team).

That, and then if a practice falls on a day that the kids have practice for all-star, it then forces the kid to choose, which if they choose x over y, y could kid them off of the team because they appear to be more committed to x than y.
That's what I've heard at least..

In Michigan you can't do both because of over training. If the seasons didn't fall at the same time you would be allowed. Likewise you can't play club hockey and school hockey in Michigan because they're at the same time. But you can play club baseball and school baseball because the seasons are different.

Wow, and here on the east coast, HS prefer Allstar kids. Is there a favor of HS vs allstar in Arizona because of this rule?
