Really, I am going to hate this rule. even with tight curls my hair goes past my shoulders. (maybe they aren't tight enough) but My hair doesn't look good in a bun ugh!

I'm from NY. This rule has been in effect for our area for two years, I think. It looks pretty strange at first, but I actually liked it better when I was flying, because I never got my hand caught in my bases' hair (and now that I base, it's nice to not have my hair ripped out, too!). A lot of teams at the competitions we go to look really messy though, so my whole team bought those hair donut things to make sure our buns look really neat. Here's a picture our hair after we competed:

This was the rule in Missouri for regionals and state. We did tight curls with rollers then bobby pinned them down so that when we moved our heads, the curls didn't come up. It wasn't cute, but it was deduction free.

I haven't heard that rule since I cheered back in middle school. the only time I can remember it being enforced was in 2004. A girl on my team had incredibly long hair. Even in a ponytail & curled, it fell past her shoulders and my coach ended up tieing it up so it was in a loose bun before we took the mat. I can understand the rule for hair that's half up & half down

& I've been seeing a ton of teams competing with sock buns. Maybe I'm too old to see the appeal (and now I sound like my mother). I kind of hate them. I feel a lot better when my hair is whipping around in a ponytail
