I'm trying to quote just a mom but I'm on the FB app which....doesn't work well at this point.

She's exactly right. I feel bad for people that think this is an acceptable idea. If you don't have the time/can't write a paper, leave college and come back later in life when you're ready. The idea of that website is utterly ridiculous.

I was an academic librarian at a college before I became a co children's librarian. I can look at a paper and tell if it's plagiarized. I'mim going to basically guarantee that no pof easier is stupid enough FYI fall for a paper from this website...and if they are is seriously consider tranferring colleges.

I'm sure this post looks crazy. I can't wait until the app is fixed

As always J-A-M is right. I have also been told there is a program where you can see what has been copied and pasted into a document. No clue if there is any truth to that but I wouldnt want to chance it.

Was it turnitin.com? I remember using that in high school and it seems like a similar concept.

I was going to say turnitin.com too! I know that one does it, and there is another one that my professor told me she uses (because we were discussing my group member in another class who plagiarized her whole section of our paper  ). I can't remember the name but she said the whole business department uses it - they just drop your document in and it spits it back out with sections highlighted and links to where the same wording can be found. She gave out 3 zeros the first week for it. Not me, thank god!

You're right - even if they don't use the software, I'm going to guarantee if they've ever met the person, they can usually tell if someone wrote their own paper. That's actually how I figured out that the girl in my group plagiarized her paper - because I was reading it and I was like, "Um...there's just no way. She can't even speak in a complete sentence - no way did she write this." I dropped 2 sentences into the search bar of google and found her whole page she'd "written"!

This website is crazy to me! I'll have to give my daughter a heads up. She loves writing, but she has horrific time management skills - so I could see her thinking this was a great idea.

But it uses wikipedia and if your professor uses any type of plagiarism checking software you'll get busted. All my professors do - and people are always surprised when they get caught. They don't even have to use the software (although it's faster) - google will search it too.

Also, if anyone else in your class uses it and you are doing the same topic ever, you'll both have the same paper.

I'm going to go ahead and say this is a bad idea (from a standpoint of a fellow student because you can get in trouble, and as a mom because it's actually just cheating). . :( :( :(

When I was in grad school, they submitted your paper on the program and it did a web search. It would give you a percentage of your paper that was copied. Obviously if you quoted research or something, that would count, but it would highlight it and you could make sure the copied area was cited properly. If more than 15% was "copied" even if it was research and cited, you could not submit it.

Lol I just thought that website was funny, because some student would actually use it! I would never think about using it, because like @Just-a-Mom said, it pulls information from Wikipedia.....that website I thought was a joke, I found it on pinterest. That post was meant to be funny, not taken seriously ;) Sorry everyone!!

Hee hee if it makes you feel better, my first thought was, "What? But she's so smart!!! I know she wouldn't...?"

:D So even thought I didn't know you were kidding, I did think you were way too smart for that!!!

Last year a girl copied and pasted the entire Wikipedia page about someone into our documentary script.... Left the hyperlinks and everything :banghead: this is why there should be at least some sort of requirement before you take an AP class...

anyone have tips for focusing when writing a paper? i get distracted and end up going online every two minutes

This won't help with the focus, but can help to eliminate some distractions. There is an app for your computer called Self Control and once you download it, just put in the websites you want to stay off of (FB, twitter, tumblr, etc) and the amount of time you want to work, and then your computer will block those sites for the amount of time you set, but you can still access the rest of the internet for researching. I also love an app called 30/30 on my phone. It's basically an egg timer but you can save lists and things on it so for days when I need to study a lot I set timers to repeat all day to keep me on track. I do 30 min study, 10 min play time, then repeat, but you can set your own parameters and adjust as you go through your list of tasks. That might not make sense, but if you look at the app hopefully it will haha :) and if you have an iPhone put it on do not disturb mode!

I used to have a program that blocked everything on my computer but then something went wrong and after the timer was done everything was still blocked and I had to take it to best buy so they could remove the program. have you heard of this one doing that?

Honestly I've only ever used it once and that was during finals when I was at my breaking point, but it worked fine for me! My cousin uses it pretty regularly and I know she hasn't ever had any problems with it, but I can definitely see how you'd be cautious of that kind of program haha
