All-Star Gyms Run By A "board"?

I am not aware of any in our area. We have co owners. Gyms run by a board sounds pretty scary. Kind of like how our government is running right now.

That's basically how it is. They refuse to let us have two practices a week per team, and instead have several "tumbling classes" a week for girls that aren't even on the teams. They never meet to discuss things that need improved, and overall just make coaching there very stressful.

I'm mystified by this. Who founded the gym in the first place? Was/is there an owner but now the board has the final say? Who makes up this board and how was it determined they would be the decision makers? Is there one head person who has the final say or does that not even exist? I just cannot imagine a gym being run this way and being even remotely successful.

It was a merge of two gyms, lots of drama took place that I don't know the entire story of, the board is two cheer dads and the president has a daughter that used to cheer but now doesn't, and he coaches youth football. He is supposed to have final say over everything. It's a mess, to say the least

Sounds like a terrible set up. I feel bad for the athletes and their parents. Do the coaches have a say in anything?

Unfortunately, no. Us coaches have no say. We've begged for a second practice for each team and were denied. It's to the point that we're "sneaking" extra practices and having to pull the first few competitions from our schedule. We honestly feel terrible for the athletes being denied practice times.

I have never heard of this in this day and age, but when I lived in NJ during the time frame of 98-02, I worked at a Gym that was run by a Board, but most of the coaches were on a board, so there were never too many problems until about "01", that is when all of the great folks left it, and things went to Ugly real Quick! Things fell apart, and most of the kids went to all of the neighboring or close gyms: World Cup, Jersey Devils, Spirit Explosion, Central Jersey, etc..... again haven't heard of anything like this in awhile, sounds like it's not going to well for all of you... Good Luck!!!!!!

Ours is run this way and it's working well. We have a group of boarddirectors. More older people WHO mainly do all the legal and financial stuff. Then we have a technical board which is set up by different coaches: dance, tumbling, cheer....
our gym has cheer, dance, gymnastics and ropeskipping. So from every part there is at least One coach. We have a monthly meeting and every two months we have a meeting with all coaches from every sport.
the general board has meetings too and the technical board passes all the problems and questions to them, unless it's something small, then they can decide too. In the beginning IT seemed pretty scary. Before i was an independant gymowner and i was afraid i would have nothing to say anymore but in fact IT Works very well and i got the feeling i got a lot of support. Ex if we have a problem with an athlete, someone from the board will come to be the "bad guy" so we dont need to waste any time.

That doesn't sound too bad, but at our gym, the coaches aren't even allowed on the board. We have absolutely no say in anything.

Many years ago in VA there was a gym owned by a board of parents. The parents where the financial backing but had a great say in the running of the gym. There was also an experienced cheer coach who was the director. Gym folded after a few years for various reasons.

It sounds more like youth league cheer rather than an all-star gym. It must be supremely frustrating for all the coaches, and I am amazed that coaches and athletes have not left especially if they are practicing only once a week as dictated by the board.
