I have recently noticed that a cheer competition company has started holding cheerleading pageants called "America's Perfect Cheerleader" around the state of Florida. Contestants compete in traditional cheerleading categories and can win for "best jumps," "best dance," "best tumbling," "best stunt group," etc., as well as, in beauty, personality, and fashion categories. Winners get tiaras and sashes. I wondered whether pageants such as these were being held in other parts of the country, also what people think of cheerleading being turned into a pageant. At a time when many people are working hard to get cheerleading recognized as a legitimate sport, I am not so sure that putting a sash and a tiara on it is the best thing to do. Thoughts?

I haven't seen this, but then, I don't move in pageant circles.
Frankly, I know a few really, really good cheerleaders that are also amazing pageant girls. I hope, for the other contestants' sake, they don't compete. They'll whoop booty.
I don't think this type of thing would have any impact on all star being recognized as a sport in the least. Everyone that read this thought "T&T," so I don't think this would reflect any more on the sport than the 3 year-old in a cowboy hat and boots and a buckle reflects on rodeo people.

ETA: On the flip-side, if only super-talented athletes competed in these pageants, or won them, maybe it could actually boost how people see the athleticism of these kids. They're certainly not JUST a pretty face, and we all know that.

It's a spin off of Champions Cup. (The state comp that never happened.. Not to be confused with champions league) those pageants (dance and cheer) were originally supposed to be held as part of that week. When champions cup folded got postponed they tried to continue with Americas Perfect Cheerleader. My CP tried out for champions league so I get the emails constantly. Not a fan!

Oh my...

last summer i was aproched about a cheerleading pageant contest too that was run online. Just different pictures and people could vote on them.
they said they'd run it online first and in the future hope it would get a chance to become a division on bigger competitions...well i hope not! Sound horrible to me!

Don't they do this in dance?

ETA: Some of this I don't totally disagree with. I hate the concept of a beauty category, but interviewing skills & poise are things you need throughout all of life.
At most dance comps the title winner is based on the dancer's solo, and maybe an interview. But usually you have to pay an extra fee to even be considered for a title.

From watching Toddler's and Tiara's (not proud) there is a fee to enter the pageant. Then more fee's to enter the side awards.....Most photogenic, etc.
