This team was a non-stunting, non-tumbling pep squad until I was hired 14 months ago, so this is HUGE progress:
- 14 cartwheels (All of them! Yay!)
- 10 round offs
- 5 back walkovers (+1 backbend kickover who is this close to making that a walkover!)
- 1 back handspring
We are sideline-only...
CP's gym has four teams at D2 Summit and all of them are going to day two! I am so proud of them - our gym opened last year, so this was their second season. To have all of our eligible teams get Summit bids and go on to day two is huge!
I went to one in Florida several years in a row, and the sessions with Linda Gooch from UCF cheer in and of themselves were worth it! It really was a great event and I learned a lot every year. They are just now bringing one to Michigan, and I am going this weekend!
I am leaning seriously toward Under Armour uniforms after looking at their catalog and talking with a rep from GK. The uniforms look sharp and I feel like UA generally produces good quality products.
They sent some designs today and they are very, very cute. I am looking at a uniform from...
This is my past season and upcoming season exactly. I am new to this program and have taken over from a longtime and much beloved coach who was a fine coach but didn't push the athleticism and skills aspect of cheerleading. We're in the process of a complete changeover in the program, so I...
Michigan uses neither. If you're curious, you can watch videos of MHSAA competitions on YouTube. It's three rounds; no music; no props (signs, poms, etc.); each round requires specific skills. It's very different.
I do want to do a UCA camp because we are sideline right now and we do really...
Michigan. It's a whole different ball game. This is my first year coaching a school team in Michigan (I have coached all star here and school in a more traditional UCA-style state) so I am still learning the ropes.
I agree that it's not the best.
UCA camps are not popular in our state. The local companies that run camps and teach skills specific to our state's style of competing are much, much more popular. Those fill up quickly. There are currently zero teams signed up for the UCA camp I'd like to...
Totally stealing the folder idea. I do a folder for all the kids who made it, but I love the idea of the other folder.
At my current school, coaches are to call kids in one by one immediately after the tryouts and tell them whether or not they made the team. We only have one team and around...
Hi everyone! I have a complicated question.
Background Information: I have coached one year (two seasons) in my current district. I was hired to coach here in May of last year. The team cheers for football games and basketball games. They do not currently compete. However, that is a...
This might be off-topic for this particular thread, but does anyone's HS team have Varsity Motionflex uniforms? We are looking at a package with a Motionflex skirt (with attached briefs) and two Motionflex tops.
I'd like to know if this material holds up well over time and is flattering on...
I think the garter thing might be unique to Florida. I never saw them growing up (in the north) but the high schools where I lived in Florida (Sarasota) use them for senior night and/or homecoming.
NO. Rules apply everywhere - practices, games, competition, your backyard, etc. The HS team in my hometown is horrible and does 2-2-1 split pyramids and it makes my heart stop. These coaches need to get educated.
(Disclaimer: I didn't watch the video, just read your writing about the skills...
Could be a deal breaker in Michigan due to the way scoring works. In round two, each team must perform five skills from three categories: flexibility, jumping, and tumbling. The team must perform at least one from each category. The highest scoring skill for flexibility is triple splits. (A...
My middle school cheer program is fairly new - going into our fourth year. Last year, we did UCA camp for the first time, but we did a home camp to keep things low key and not overwhelm the girls. This year, I think they are ready for the big time. So, I am taking 14 middle schoolers to UCA...
At the middle school where I coach, we have one pep rally before the first football/volleyball game of the year. We introduce all the fall sports teams and my cheerleaders perform a cheer from camp. If I were at a high school, I would LOVE to do theme pep rallies - so much fun! At our state...
Agreed. I think this idea is a holdover from the days when cheerleading was a popularity contest. I'm thinking of the 1960s or early 70s when student panels would vote on the prettiest, most popular girls to be on the pep squad. (At least, this was the way it worked at my mother's and aunt's...
Our football season runs first week of September through mid-October (2 games per week.) We compete in December/January. We did not use our bid to nationals this year, so the girls had optional tumbling in January/February. We do tryouts in late March and begin practicing for camp right away...
We had silver sparkle briefs (under royal blue skirts) in college and I hated them. My ladies wear navy crop tops and briefs under their navy uniforms. They are forever asking for sparkle briefs.
I send an email. When I have had a team website, I have posted it there. The next morning, I also post the list on my classroom door (I teach here, too) and have the list read on the morning announcements.
In the email, I always make suggestions of what girls can do if they do not make the...
