I am certified to coach cheer and tumbling, but we never took more than 5 minutes out of practice to work tumbling and even then it was just to perfect what was in a routine. With the amount of material my hs girls had to learn, I didn't have time or the equipment to train them how to tumble as...
We've had various shirts. This year it was "Get Loud or Go Home" on the front, "Mohawks" on the back. We also had another one made that said "Why not us" on the front, "MHS" on the back. for 2013 ours were "Like a 13oss" on the front. It's early but you might ask if the team has a slogan or...
The school I coached (just gave it up) has had the same warm-ups for 4 years. We bought them from GTM and they have lasted like crazy. We don't have football so I don't know if they would be chilly, but I suggest looking for fleece lined ones.
As for shoes. We had Nike Cheer Flashes for 2 years...
I think no matter how you try to announce a team, those who didn't make it will be upset and eventually everyone will know who made it and who didn't. I've coached 4 years and only 2 times did I ever cut anyone. Not because I'm such a nice coach that I don't want to hurt feelings, but because...
Trust me, in a school of less than 100 kids, everyone knows who makes it nearly instantly. Even if I posted numbers, everyone would still know whose number was what. It's that small. The times that I've had to cut girls, they preferred being told with their friends. At least then they had some...
Just held tryouts on Friday and decided to announce by showering them in glitter. lol Each girl held a black balloon above their head. Myself, my graduating senior, and the new coach walked by and popped each balloon. If they were showered in glitter then they made it. The girls loved it!!
In...
I loved competing, it's in my blood, but I so enjoyed my team this year when we were just a sideline team. My ladies made treat bags for all the basketball players before each game. There were always tons of signs all over the school supporting the team. They always were coming up with new ways...
While I can't speak for your particular situation, I can speak from a participant, judges, and coach's standpoint. I was kept off my cheer team my 8th grade year because of a horrible (and outright ridiculous) teacher evaluation (insight, the teacher who gave me the horrible evaluation had her...
Things were a bit different this season as our AD was out on maternity leave and our fill in AD is the basketball coach/PE teacher. He doesn't listen to drama, excuses, or believe that homework is an excuse for skipping practice. I had 100% backing this season. Sadly, our AD is back now and...
I coach at a very small high school (enrollment is 89). So many people want to discredit having a small team from a small school, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I took over the program and it was as low as it could get. Prior year the coach knew nothing about cheerleading (no...
Yeah, IHSA limits the number of competitions you can compete in within a season. Really limits teams to ICCA regionals, ICCA state, IHSA Sectionals, and IHSA state. You might get to throw in an extra one here and there but depends on if you compete both systems or just one.
I can kinda see having to pull some people to make the routine work after having someone quit. I wasn't in that position exactly but I had this happen: 1st competition- team of ten ended up pulling two people off the week before as alternates because they simply didn't know the routine or care...
I didn't get to go and watch, but most of the same teams are up in the top as expected. Some teams I've seen compete this season already scores seemed a bit low for but perhaps they had mistakes this time that they didn't have the first time.
The question has no easy or definitive answer. But here's my advice:
For Middle School (competitive): During the summer months I would have them attend team tumbling 1-2 times per week plus practicing skills for 30 minutes or so during your practices (provided you have proper equipment and...
I'm shocked by there not being an admission charge for games...it's the standard here. It's usually $3 for a game, $1 for students for a normal basketball game (home, some away games charge more depending on what school we are actually at). Then tournaments vary as well, anywhere from $5 a game...
Aww. The small varsity group is a tough one. There are so many awesome teams. Being able to hold your heads high and proud of how you did is what makes a good year. Enjoy the rest of the season. :)
If you have the counts, depending on how many stunt groups you have going up, alternate their timing. Two go up on the same count with the other two going two or four counts later, same with dismounting. Perhaps have the two libs that can't heel stretch do a dismount (cradle or prone or even a...
I know exactly where you are from now!! Not too far away since my hubby was a Bomber and I know the area! Good luck this season with competition, we seen your team last year at comps, if I remember correctly you had a guy that could tumble his butt off!
