I know exactly where it went. Varsity (most of it I paid directly to them and camp fees went through ASB). And I'll know where the money for competition goes to, I just don't know how much it will be. The coaches aren't being shady, they're just not making low costs a priority.
At least with all star cheer you can shop around. We have zero choice about the high school situation. My daughter chose not to cheer sophomore year and I doubt she'll cheer senior year. I'm glad because the costs are out of control. For the record, every cheerleader has paid whatever...
I don't have sympathy, I just think it's important to acknowledge the culture in youth sports that supports this type of coaching. Remember I'm the mom who pulled her kid from cheer because a very popular coach in the industry made her team "earn" water on a 95* day. I lost friends over it...
Yes. This is why I'm somewhat uncomfortable villianizing this one coach. Obviously not all coaches, or even most, coach this way...and the ones who do don't *only* coach in this way. It needs to be addressed, but the way this guy is being crucified on social media is also really upsetting to me...
I've paid, so far, $1627 directly to Varsity for apparel, and $400 (to Varsity through ASB) for a three day camp at a college campus, for the upcoming school year.
One thing that bothers me, is that it's not just this coach. There's a culture among cheer and coaches of other youth sports that this and other types of abuse are "just what it takes" and parents buy it and that needs to stop. If abuse is what it takes (in this form or in other forms), then...
I'm wouldn't be surprised if most parents and kids just accepted this is what it takes. I pulled my kid from cheer because nobody cared about something unsafe that was happening. Gym owners didn't care, parents were afraid to say something, it was awful. Parents are afraid that if they call out...
I would be too, but I'd also be really hesitant to schedule travel (other than by car) on a competition day. Experience tells me that delays and schedule changes tend to happen and the larger the competition, the more likely the delay.
Making another comment on this post because, coincidently the same thing happened yesterday at my daughter's prior gym. A year ago, they threatened to pull from a competition, but decided to attend at the last minute. So, in that time, nothing has changed? No policies were made to strengthen...
I've always been fortunate enough to be a paying parent, but I can also sympathize with non-paying parents. I've experienced not receiving the whole picture of the financial commitment at more than one gym. When a gym adds expensive travel competitions four or five months in to the season (this...
If parents aren't paying, why are their children allowed to continue to participate? Either way, it seems like a management issue. I understand it's difficult, but it's the job of the business to make sure people pay...in order to protect the investment of the people who honor their financial...
It was changed two years ago when there was an ownership change. I'm not sure why cheer updates referred to the previous name...sort of inconsiderate, IMO. Not like they were a big name gym or anything. The previous ownership was a political family locally, so name recognition was important to...
Randomly, in all of my tears as a baseball mom, I have zero idea who the best teams are nationally. We play, for the most part, kids in our state. We've traveled a few hours away...once to Canada. His final season has required two hotel stays and zero plane rides...and maybe $50 total in...
I don't agree with this. My son has played baseball for years. Every year his uniforms become more extravagant. No bling our cutouts, obviously. Lol! This year he has FOUR jerseys, I think. Each one costs probably $35 or more. Every year is a completely new uniform wardrobe and we pay for it...
