Didn't start cheer until uni and there we had no tumbling coach. Now I've graduated my coach is being brilliant about getting me to do it with a combination of coaxing and no mercy.
If you're really struggling to hit your preps, maybe you could try some show-and-gos first? Obviously not going through to extension but just drilling that so you practice rising up and standing and then coming straight back down. It should help you get your weight placement right which will...
I'm not sure what you mean by themes, as such, because I've never had a pep rally as a UK cheerleader - but I do think that sometimes themes can be a little too restrictive. The kids will want to be learning new and different things so whilst themes are absolutely fantastic for special events...
I have the opposite thing, where I was on a tall team so have been a base the whole time I've been cheering and am now on a squad of tiny people so I'm a back. I think that your arms will always hurt whichever way round you switch, even if you're doing it right, because there is weight going...

I'm not sure what you're talking about throwing but is this even if doing it onto a crash mat or into a foam pit?
I've had taller and shorter flyers, ones who are more muscler and some who are really thin. There's no one type who can fly - working hard on tightness, skills and positions are all far more important. I personally love a tall flyer - makes skills look beautiful!
