College gymnastics is a spectacular sport with a major grade inflation problem.

AGREED. I really want to love NCAA, but this scoring system kills me. UCLA was no doubt amazing on Saturday. But they only had two routines score below a 9.8. That's just nuts. They leave themselves with no room sometimes and are forced into giving 10s a little too often. Sometimes it's deserved but a lot of the time it's not.

I totally get that it's different than elite and it should be kept as such, but I do think the scoring inflation is an issue they are going to have to address at some point.

Very much agreed. I only follow OU team twitter so I don't know actual stats on other teams, but it seems almost every meet of the last two seasons they'd post that there was a record high score, and they scored at least 138 every meet this season. You can't go up much from there. The top 5/6 programs are all going to hit that 138 average soon and then where do we go? I like close competition, don't get me wrong, but when half your team is throwing up routines with 10.00 start values the 10 loses its shine a little bit. But where do they go - add harder skills and lower the values of current skills? It should rightfully be different than elite, but we're reaching a standstill soon.

As previously posted I am PUMPED Mags hit her gym-slam, but even I don't think that bars routine from semis was 10.00 worthy. Her handstands weren't hit and I could find a few places to shave off .01 or two. Or on the flip side, if hers WAS a 10, then a few more routines that night should have also been 10s.

Yep. And like the article said, when major form breaks are getting 9.7s and straight up face plants can pull a 9.3, something's got to give. I don't blame them for wanting to keep the simple scoring system, it's much easier for a casual sports fan to follow and root along for their school of choice. If it stays, they may need to look at lowering values. I don't know if harder skills can be thrown soon but that would probably be a byproduct of lessened values.

I'm not big into delving into these gymnasts personal lives, but since she addressed it directly on Instagram - Mustafina and her husband have divorced.

Aliya Mustafina got divorced – Gymnovosti
Poor girl. She's got a what...one year old? AND trying to mount a comeback?

Ok, fine. I came back here for Panthers breaking the curse AND this thread. That's it.

Sounds like the All-Star Cheer Scoresheet. :)

While she's very gifted, there was zero chance she was going to go to the Olympics with USA. I'm all for the whole "you are what you think" but she was competing against girls that have lived this sport since they were 5 or 6. I don't think she had the time to hit the perfection level a lot of elite gymnasts have.

At least she has actual lineage to the country and didn't sign up for Team Belarus like some other Americans.

The team is down to 4 all-arounders and a potential specialist for 2020. And Simone is back. Unless she became the world's greatest bars worker overnight, it was never happening. She's made awesome growth in her few years in gym, but old technique habits are hard to overcome and it shows on the elite stage.

In other news, they finally fired, *ahem* forced resignation from, Rhonda Faehn. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Initially, when the scandal broke, I was mad they kept her on and didn't fire her with everyone else, but it does seem she was the glue that held women's USAG together these last few months. Long term, it's for the best, but to see so many athletes very boldly and publicly tweeting Kerry and begging to keep her has thrown me.

She was the first "higher up" informed of the abuse. She should have fought harder to protect those kids.

I was confused with all of it too when I started seeing the athletes just re-posting the "keep her" message. Part of me wonders with them just all reposting the same message shows if they're just regurgitating what someone else said instead of how they really feel, but then again it's been only a couple younger, current athletes I've seen posting. Have any non-current/survivor athletes posted anything regarding keeping her?

In an effort to not speculate on victims, my hope is that most of the current senior elites were spared any abuse. With the exception of Simone, Ragan, and Marz, they were all still juniors when they finally got rid of Nassar and hopefully being younger/not as injured/not a priority for the olympic team/not being at the ranch as often/etc. kept them safe. They naively may not realize the survivors do not want her around. Or maybe having a familiar face is comforting, idk.

Simone is understandably quiet, but if she couldn't even fathom returning to the ranch, I doubt having Rhonda still running the show was comforting. Aly has publicly demanded getting rid of everyone, Rhonda included, but that's it as far as I know.
