I think maybe people feel they can crap on cheerleaders because it’s “punching up.” Like how you can make fun of the president because he’s leader of the free world so he should be able to take a little heat, but you can’t make fun of disenfranchised groups because they already deal with enough BS and it’s just not funny. Same thing (except not). People assume cheerleaders have it made in a lot of ways, so they should be able to tolerate endless ridicule, stereotypes, and exploitative Lifetime movies. That’s pretty much the only reason I can think of. And it’s pretty ingrained in the media.

Example: remember when that teenager was “divorcing” her parents? And every news outlet added that she also happened to be a cheerleader even though it had NOTHING to do with the story? They just really wanted to contribute to the whole “cheerleaders are spoiled brats” trope. And they did.

Or when some college sorority got in trouble for mishandling funds or something. Can’t remember the details, but it was pretty egregious. So what headline photo did one particular news site use? A pic of one of the college’s cheerleaders at a football game. She did not belong to the sorority and had nothing to do with anything. But since the site assumed that dumb sorority girls and cheerleaders were interchangeable, up she went. Fortunately, the outcry from the site’s commentariat about how irresponsible the move was forced the site to swap out the photo with one of the actual sorority house instead, so at least that was heartening. But nonetheless, the damaging sentiment was there.

ETA: Oh FFS here’s another one. Don’t read the YT comments. Never read the YT comments:
