    ^^^Along the same lines:

I have seen some gyms having specific Summit team tryouts and I wonder if this displaces kids who are already on a team? In theory it should only be replacing any Worlds crossovers but I wondered.

Everyone is all like "finish your season" but in these sorts of situations (e.g. midseason type tryouts for Summit. Or midseason openings on Worlds teams that displace kids) what is a kid/parent to do?

You can't "Loyalty!!!!" people to death then be free to add to a team for Summit or shuffle positions when someone new/possibly better comes onto a Worlds team.

Ex: Situations in which Tina Tumbler said she was not cheering for whatever reason. Then in middle of season, Tina decides she is cheering and someone loses a flyer or tumbler spot for Tina. Then when that kid leaves because not fair, it's World War 3.

Or if a gym has a Summit-specific tryout and it results in Suzy becoming a nugget for running tumbling to make a spot for New Kid from Summit Tryout. That child will not be happy and it is unreasonable to 'LOYALTY' them into staying.

School example: If we randomly decided to have a midyear tryout and add the entire gymnastics team, then make my 6 main tumblers nuggets, they are going to quit.

Yep happens every March. Multiple teams at 1 gym need bodies....in other words use over the number allowed crossovers or illegal different level to level for bids and then have tryouts!

Loyalty goes both ways. Gyms want you, the paying customer, to be loyal but do the gyms use the same choreographer every year, the same music producer every year? Sometimes yes, but sometimes they use someone they think is better. No one says gyms are being disloyal for finding the best deal for their dollar.

It's routine to see flyers start coming out now and in the next few weeks for both Summit and World's. Want loyalty? Be loyal to your customers first.

Don't use kids to get those bids and then turn around and reshuffle and replace them. Until that stops happening, I will never be in favor of the waiver system because it is sided too strongly with the gyms and not enough on the athletes who make up this sport.

Out of curiosity on your stance (side note, I agree with your post) but what would you think if the flyer was no longer doing her job and/or mental blocking? What if they weren't contributing what they tried out with or had been all season? What if it was the best interest of the team to pull a flyer (or base for that matter) and replace them? As a coach, I have pulled kids off teams for the benefit of the team. The most drastic being I pulled a kid off my Worlds team at our Worlds showcase the day before we left for Worlds. She was busting her tumbling passes and I had an alternate (who joined the team alert we had a bid) who was not at all busting. While it broke my heart to pull a kid from a Worlds team the night before we left for Worlds, it was in teams best interest to do. Granted, the athlete was warned about the loss of her skills, but at what point is it about the teams success and not the individual or said loyalty? Still pulls at my heart to this day but I know I made the right decision.

Let's say your kid is on WonItAll Allstars this year, and down the road Ima Mazing and all her amazing friends at ThoughtWe'dWin Allstars now want to be on your kid's team for World's. Can you see the benefit to your child if Ima Amazing and all of her amazing friends aren't released from ThoughtWe'dWin if they're more amazing than yours? Can you see the benefits to ThoughtWe'dWin's remaining athletes if Ima and her friends aren't released? It's not a fool proof rule, but the waiver rule along with roster percentage rules help prevent that from happening. The rule doesn't only effect the unhappy customer, it protects the happy kid on the winning team, too.

The one gym you constantly refer to regarding this is doing nothing illegal. You may not like how they do things, but they are not doing anything outside of the rules.

In any of these scenarios would you have held hostage the athlete you replaced for the remainder of the season or would you have released them to go elsewhere if they chose to.

I don't think any rule is black or white enough to cover every scenario and there are valid reasons why some athletes don't make the mat by the end of the season; injuries, mental blocks...etc. However, when none of these issues are happening, athletes are still being replaced with little to no voice or choice.

If a gym refuses to release an athlete or releases them without an outlined exception (injury, block, unpaid bills as an example), I think the athlete should be able to refuse to release their spot on the roster.

Maybe it's the optimist in me, but I'd like to think that sometimes (probably rarely) gyms do these tryouts to replace athletes who can't afford to go, which is common where we live because travelling to/attending worlds will cost about $2000, or are injured. I know it's probably the less likely scenario, but a girl can dream.

Oh, I understand the rationale for removing someone if someone else can do it better. But being replaced by someone who walked through the door for the first time in March or April when you have been working and improving all season, but they’re just plain better disincentives working. Don’t be surprised if that athlete is not exactly the first to sign up to evaluate next season, and doesn’t exactly encourage their friends to sign up.

Has there been an update to this, or are they still refusing to release her?

There has been an *update*ish but its so steeped in twitter cheer anon rumor I don't feel comfortable saying its fact. I have heard woodlands has filed a lawsuit but I don't know what legal grounds they would have if they did.

Yeah, that really seemed very rumor when I read it, and has to be about something other than the release.
