Hello, some of you may remember me posting a while back about wanting to cheer, but being worried about logistics. Now I have a bit more freedom as I can drive, but I'm still stuck on what I want to do and am looking for advice on how to decide besides looking at the list of pros and cons I made because it seems very 50/50.

Tryouts for the gymnastics team I'm on are coming up soon in a week or so and so are fall tryouts for a new gym that is closer to where I live. I'd still have to drive around 30-40 minutes each way which is a lot for my family, but more workable than in the past where my mom would have to drive one hour each way. I made a list of pros and cons of each and I feel very divided. It seems my heart lies more with cheer at this point (granted I've only tried it once and I could feel completely different about it) but logistically gymnastics is much easier.
Looking at this list I made I have no idea how to decide. Are there any factors I'm not considering? Any advice on how to make a decision if I'm so unsure?

Some of the reasons to switch I've heard from high level gymnasts/divers who switch include that you can do cheer once you've aged out of gymnastics, and it will be easier in your body. Also, many of them enjoy the team aspect that they didn't find as much in an individual sport

Really though, you need to decide which direction you want to go in based on what you're enjoying and what is in your area. Is staying in gymnastics and doing a rec team an option?? That way you could get a better feel for cheer without giving up on gymnastics if you find you don't enjoy cheer

Team gymnastics is really cheaper than All Star? That's unusual compared to here.

I'm in high school gymnastics which is completely free during our season aside from uniform/spirit wear. So paying for 9 months of off season training is cheaper than a full year of all star. However, that also means my state requirements make it so I can't do another sport while being on my schools team forcing me to have to decide.

Is cheer a sport in your area? Here it's an activity.

What have your parents said?

Have you calculated travel and competition costs? I doubt that cheer is cheaper than gymnastics when you plug in all the hidden costs especially with older athletes like you.

Can you academically handle missing school?

Honestly, if you get into all star cheer, it will be a huge commitment for you and your family.

I strongly doubt that AS cheer is less likely to get injuries than gymnastics.

My son was in rehab after a surgery to remove a tumor form his spinal cord. He was on a special needs team. One thing they told me was that cheer was out permanently due to the high risks of injuries even for his team. Apparently at their rehab program, they get about 200 kids a year needing long term rehab from cheer related injuries. That's spine and brain injuries. Cheerleading is a very dangerous and high risk sport.

By the way, I am not trying to sway you either way. I just want you to have all the facts when making your decision. I don't want you to make a decision based on bad information

All star cheerleading was the best thing I ever did. I would recommend it, especially doing all star cheerleading. You will still get to enhance your tumbling skills. Injures are definitely prone, I have gotten injured. Also, cheerleading is expensive, but any sport is expensive. In cheerleading, there is more expenses then you would think. It goes from practice wear, bows, comp makeup, shoes, uniform, traveling (fees & overall), and competition spending. It will add up, but the memories and such will all be worth it. I have life long friends from all star cheerleading and high school cheerleading. It is really if you want an individual or team sport at the end of the day.

I used to be a gymnast, I stopped at level 9 when I had a back injury at only 14. After the year I took to heal, I tried getting back in but I lost almost all of my skills (I was capable of a shitty roundoff- backtuck and a standing bhs). I also started cheer with a friend from school who went to a gym nearby. I noticed that it was like a huge family from the begining and it was a lot easier on my body than gymnastics was. My experience was, that I love gymnastics and I love it probably because I started the day I learned to walk. It was all I knew, but I will never regret quitting gymnastics to stick with cheer, because I noticed that I could have a cheerleading "career" after 16 (thats when most girls at my gym stopped, because they couldn't handle the 6 times a week training + school or their bodys were completly broken). I also made friendships with some girls I wouldn't have if it was for cheer. It was also something I chose to do. That is just the way it worked out for me and my situation.

Hopefully you are also posting this question in a gymnastics board of some type. By posting on a cheerleading board, we are all at least a little biased ;)
