My son is an 8th grader in TX and at the middle school you have to have 2 years of PE or "athletics". If you choose athletics, it's one of your classes instead of PE, if you choose PE, you have PE, every day. Just like you would athletics. Their schedule is such that they have every class every day (art, health, etc). I actually like it, it makes it much simpler than the schools with even/odd days or A/B days or whatever. Now, my son is NOT in athletics and probably never will be, so I have no idea what they do in athletics "class".

LOL! I hear you! I honestly don't know how other schools here in Texas handle their cheer practices. But I am glad that they treat it like any other "sport" like volleyball, basketball, soccer and softball which is also treated as a class that they have every day. It takes up one elective, which still works out fine since several cheerleaders have a GPA of 5.0 which means that they are able to take all Pre-AP and AP courses. My youngest CP is in middle school volleyball and athletics is also a class that is scheduled every day however cheer in middle school is considered extra-curricular and is scheduled 2 days a week after school.

There are select schools in Tennessee that also have it as a class. It's not every day because of A/B day switches. Sometimes it's twice a week and sometimes it's 3 times a week. It's not too common, but I can name a few around our area that do it.

I live in Texas and Cheer is a class, usually the period during your lunch time or right after lunch. When I say during your lunch I mean the period that decides what lunch you have(a,b,c,d), usually we have the last lunch. In middle school, since we went to all of our classes everyday, I had cheer for an hour everyday. In high school we have the A/B day schedule so we either meet 2 or 3 days each week. Sometimes we practice after school but usually only for pep rallies, until about 5:30. I take all advanced/gt classes and so do a lot of other girl on my freshman team, they usually put you in all of your ap/ib and core classes first and then decide what period cheer will be based on our schedules.

PE at my school is every day, you have to have 2 full years of it in high school. It counts as a full class and is factored into your GPA. You can exempt a semester of the two years if you play a sport.

Drill team too. My daughter takes 2 dance classes as her first 2 classes of the day. In addition to those 2 hour-long classes, drill team meets 2 hours before school starts. She dances from 7:00am to 10:40 am everyday of the school year. She had to move from AP Spanish 3 (it was only offered first period) to PreAP to accommodate drill team first period, but all other classes are offered during multiple periods. It never occurred to me other states did it any differently.

Both my kids have/had pe twice a week. And it's just plain old pe. No sports count as the pe requirement. They still need 2 crefits of it to graduate, but it's spread out over all 4 years. And it is part of their gpa.

I'm still not sure if I like y'all's way better or not. I looooooooooove that sports count as pe - I've always thought that should be the way. I'm just not sure how I would like having to schedule classes around pe and not the other way around.

Interesting. Learn something new every day.

In high school, we always practiced 7-10 in June then after camp it moved from 8-11 until regionals and then we had a break until school started. I think summer practices were M-F. Then during the school year it was 3:30-6 M-TH because we had football games on Fridays and the month before state we started two-a-days and those were 3:30-5:30 and then 6:30-9 (officially but we sometimes didn't get out until almost 10).

When I was in high school in Kentucky in the 70s, any varsity athlete had PE the last period of the day and it was a grade. We started practice at 2:00 every day for whatever sport we were playing.
