Not to beat a dead horse, but is cheerleading really all that different than other sports or am I just different? People ask me all the time why I watch cheer videos so much, or why I have cheer music on my iPod. Do any of the other sports go on youtube and watch their favorite teams? Is it that much different than watching college football on saturdays? Because when I try to explain why everyone thinks I'm crazy. Is it strange that I can name a gym from almost every state? Because if I mention a gym from across the country people are like, "oh, so if your not on their team how do you know about them?" When I explain I am called obsessive (which I am, but that's not the point), can't football fans name a team from most states?

I guess what I am getting at is this: Why is cheer viewed so differently, and how can I explain it to help people understand.

Such a good point! My normy friends (you know the non-cheer peeps) always talk about baseball teams and they know all these players and who got traded and who went where. It's the same thing as people gym hopping or moving for college or whatever and cheering somewhere else. But of course they see it completely differently.

If a guy can sit and watch football on ESPN for 4 hours, I can sit and watch cheerleading on youtube for 4 hours. But IMO, cheerleading is more entertaining than any other sport. No timeouts, and there is ALWAYS something going on!

I think the difference is that the cheerleading world, particularly all-stars, is not as publicized as baseball or football. I'm pretty sure most people could tell you what football is, but if you ask them about all-stars cheerleading their minds go blank. We're "weird" or "obsessive" because no one knows about it but us. It's like that kid that likes the Japanese cartoon that no one knows about. But we're really not that different otherwise.

I feel the same way as you do @WorkToWin . Especially when people say something about going to a competition that I'm not competing at.

Why do people go to watch the Yankees play or the Giants. They aren't on either team. They are fans. Every sport has fans. There are some people that can talk to others about the Yankees and rattle off useless facts about so and so from the 80s and what records were set. So why is it an issue that I know every song Stars have danced to or used in the past 10 years? Why does it matter that I know who won worlds in almost every division since the start of the competition?

It doesn't!! Because for every useless fact I know about cheerleading, there are 100 sports fans out there that know twice as many useless facts about their own sports.

People spend 100s of $$ on sports paraphernalia like Shirts, Clothes, Cups, Bumper Stickers, Hats, season tickets etc. I spend way less being a cheerleading fan.

I wonder if I can shimmy this 1 time for every dollar Beyonce has made!!

I'm thinking of hacking the Superbowl, March Madness, NBA finals, Wimbleton, NASCAR, PGA Masters, and MLB Championship, and show a 2:30 commercial of Allstar Cheer highlights (a different commercial for each of the major sports) and see what happens!! Long Live Cheer!!
